Christmas Special 2004

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have just one question for you: What is the definition of Power? The answer? Knowledge in ACTION!

If you've been through Leadership Awakening but haven't attended Leadership Adventure, you've only completed half the process. Leadership Adventure literally begins where Awakening leaves off. When you attend Leadership Adventure, you skyrocket your leadership - and life - skills at least 4-5 times beyond Awakening.

"Adventure certainly took things to a whole new level for me... I really "got" Awakening from taking Adventure... I like to tell people it was Anthony Robbins meets Survivor." - Eric Bradley, Adventure Team 136

Now you can attend Adventure at a substantial discount, but only if you sign up before December 25...

Use Your Passion to Increase the Effectiveness of Everything You Do

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

Imagine if you could tap into an unlimited amount of energy to use for any worthwhile activity, any project, any opportunity. What would that mean for your success?

You will be able to do exactly that if you know exactly how to tap into your passion.

Those of you who've gone through Leadership Awakening have already glimpsed the potential of this potent force for moving through difficult times and achieving your goals. Some of you continue to push the envelope every day by bringing this passion into every important aspect of your life. There are others, unfortunately, who end up getting distracted or losing focus on this crucial part of what gives their actions power.

So, for this issue of Let the Journey Continue, let's look at how passion fits into the process of achieving our goals and how we can cultivate it to be even more effective. And along the way let's also examine how passion directly relates to all your activities and relationships, both in business and in your personal life.

Why include passion in every aspect of your life? Wouldn't it be easier to simply do the minimum necessary to get by?

The short answer is that you don't have to include passion, and yes, it might be easier to do the minimum. On the other hand, how much more energy and attention does it really take for you to make your passion for life a part of your everyday experience?

I'd like to challenge you for a moment to consider this idea:

It takes you the exact same amount of time and energy to show your passion for living or not in every single action you take during the day. For example, when you:

  1. First get up in the morning.

  2. Have a great idea for improving your work or business and want to present it to those who can help make it happen.

  3. Greet your spouse, children and friends each day.

  4. Interact with customers, vendors and fellow workers/employees.

  5. Write your '5 & 5' each morning (you are doing that, aren't you?)

I could to on, but you get the point.

In fact, I believe from my own experience and that of many, many other graduates I've spoken with, that actively including your passion as part of everything you do actually makes everything easier! I intend to show you how this is true in this article.

So how can you make sure  that your passion shows in every interaction you have during the day? What techniques and knowledge do you need to implement this powerful process and change your experience of the world around you in a very positive way?

As a graduate, you already know how to use your "orange ball of energy" to focus yourself and get unstoppable results. Ask yourself if you are you using it to full advantage or if you could bring this to bear in other areas of your life.

What about using some of the other tools you learned in Awakening? Have you reviewed your handouts, your journal, the commitments you've made to yourself lately? Have you re-read your Mission Statement from class? Have you refined and improved it lately? What about your class homework? Did you follow through on it?

There are so many other ways you can fire up your passion. Here's a short list:

  • Attend an Awakening Graduation

  • Use the Empower U forums to communicate with your Team members

  • Send someone you love through class

  • Do you '5 & 5' every morning (see below, "Action You Can Take Today" for more on this)

  • Surround yourself with others who share a passion for living - it's truly infectious!

Can you think of more ways you can use to keep your passion alive?

Although each of these examples (and perhaps others you can think of) are simple in and of themselves, you will see an tremendous synergy effect when you do several of them every day. Here's a real-life example of how this works:

A friend of mine had very poor vision, but didn't do it for many years because he felt as though he couldn't afford them. In fact, I would say that he very much missed seeing sharp details in the world around him and it reflected in his attitude. He wasn't angry or unkind, just sort of low-key and emotionally flat much of the time.

One day, he decided that he would 'bite the bullet' and spring for the glasses. When he got them he was amazed! He could see everything crystal clear and down to the smallest detail. As he walked around during the day he also noticed something else - everyone around him had a big smile on their face! He commented to me that he was sorry he hadn't gotten glasses sooner because he had no idea that there were so many happy people in the world.

As it turns out, people weren't necessarily any happier in general, but when my friend saw everything so clearly he had a huge SMILE on his face as he went about his day, and naturally everyone he ran across saw this and smiled back! A true example of the effect of showing PASSION and how that reflects back to you in the world.

Can it really be this simple? Absolutely. But don't just take my word for it. I challenge you to make the commitment to yourself to use the tools at your disposal and to discover even more ways to bring passion to your everyday life. I guarantee it will be more rewarding than you can imagine!

Action You Can Take Today

Passion isn't something you just stumble across by accident, it's something you cultivate. One way to accomplish this is by remembering to do your "5 & 5" journal every morning. When you do, you focus your mind on what excites you. This, in turn fuels your passion for achieving your goals. In addition, by emphasizing those things for which you are grateful in your life you are tapping into a powerful positive state that supports your efforts.

Want proof? An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (April 14, 1999;281:1304-1309, 1328-1329) concluded that journaling - called "expressive writing" in the article - can contribute to dramatic improvements in physical and emotional health.

Make the commitment today to do your '5 & 5' at least 5 times a week. Your passion for reaching your goals will dramatically increase if you do.

Part 8 - A Successful Process Saturday Afternoon!

When last I left you, my TEAM had finished another process with less than desirable results. We learned about how even when given all the information we (I) need to complete my mission, I still (up until now) do not see or hear it. At times when I am not able to give my all because of my role (active follower vs. leader) do I just "take my ball and go home and pout?" Or rather do I instead use that creative side of me to add to the TEAM's effort?

Well the next process added much more intensity to the mix. My fellow Lt. Holly took the lead in the process but early on, the scourge of powerless words reared its head again and the entire TEAM suffered the consequence. This process had a time limit that at once was more than adequate, if the TEAM had learned from previous processes and was also very constrictive since we seemed to be a "slow moving group."

Plans were devised, plans were modified, communication was scattered and disjointed. If this had been a police operation, the possibility of lives being lost was very great. Because of the way the process was setup, there were a couple of things going on at the same time. What I learned from this is that since I was not the leader in this process, coordinating the supporting cast and focusing everyone's efforts to the common goal was important.

Nurturing those that although limited by their choices, their energy was still needed for the entire TEAM to succeed.

Also, gaining a different perspective of the situation is a great way to see other options to solving a problem. Up until now, I would think that "hitting it again" was all that was needed. After Adventure, I learned that a "change of approach" can make much more sense.

With the efforts of my TEAM and the good graces of the Staff, we successfully completed this process and moved into what was to be the most powerful process I had ever done, until Sunday morning.

Until we meet again...

With PASSION- HBS!

Michael

Word Play

"Passion" refers to a deep, overwhelming emotion, particularly when something is desired intensely. Such emotions can be either destructive and very positive depending on how and where the passion is focused. Originally the word passion came from a Latin word that means "suffering or martyrdom." Now, we also use it to refer to the driving force behind any great endeavor.

Living It! - Graduates Speak Out

"I know... I know... not every day is perfect, but I choose to focus on the highs of my day and how I am living each of those experiences fully. I even celebrate my lows based on how well or how poorly I handled myself... the beauty is that I see it and am able to dust myself off and hit it again. I am LIVING my life based on principles that offer brighter smiles and friendlier hellos. I am CREATING situations at work, at play, and, definitely, at home that challenge who I am and who I will become. Finally, I WANT much more of the energy and enthusiasm that I see in the faces around me when I share. The smiles brighten my day."

Hunter K. Jesse - Team 410
