Purpose... What Do You Want?

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

If you've become somewhat less focused on your Life's Purpose, you're not alone. It seems like at times we all tend to become bogged down in the day-to-day survival issues.

However, because it is the New Year, and because every action you take either moves you towards—or away from—your Purpose, this is a great time to take a step back and see how all the pieces fit together. It's a great time to refocus on your Purpose.

Here's an excellent metaphor to describe the importance of knowing your Purpose:

Whenever an airplane takes off, there is a plan, a goal, a destination that the pilot and passengers have in mind. Part of how the plane arrives at it's destination occurs inside an internal navigation system in the plane that is programmed to go to the correct destination.

An odd fact about this navigation system is this: about 90% of the time when a plane is in the air, it is actually off course. Winds blow, pilots get distracted and the plane veers ever so slightly in a different direction than the actual destination.

That's when the internal navigation system kicks in. Once it recognizes that the path has changed, it steps in to make mid-course corrections. To understand how truly effective this is, see if you can recall the last time you heard of a plane landing at the wrong airport by mistake.

This airplane's internal navigation system is a wonderful metaphor for your Purpose and Mission in life. If you keep referring back to it you will know immediately if you have drifted off course and can then take steps to get back on track.

See the "Action Steps for Today" below for a practical way you can strengthen and hold to your Purpose when faced with overwhelming circumstances. And for even more ideas on how to discover, refine and achieve your true Purpose in life, I recommend that you read Scott V. Black's powerful book, Becoming Your Dreams: Want It. Create It. Live It!

Action Steps for Today - Anchoring Your Purpose

Your ability to hold to your Purpose is often tested when you are faced with overwhelming circumstances. This is true whether these are created by events or interactions with 'crab-like' people.

One great way to deal with these situations is to create an anchor that will remind you to strongly step into your Purpose. If you've attended Awakening you already have some pretty strong anchors for very positive states that you can call upon.

But don't just use them... build on them.

For example: You can preemptively take action to prepare yourself for the next 'crab-attack.' Here's how:

First, recall your Purpose by re-reading your Mission Statement or remembering times when you've acted with a strong sense of your Purpose. While you do this, 'set' your anchor. For those of you who haven't yet attended Awakening, this means create a strong association with some physical action such as, for example, clasping your hands together.

Then, remember the last time you were faced with major crab-like behavior. But instead of simply recalling how you reacted at the time, imagine what you could have done if you had been focused on what is truly important to you; if you'd been focused on your Purpose. When you imagine this, really step into this imagination process with all of your senses - sight, sound and feeling. Imagine yourself responding from a much more powerful and clear place. While you do this, fire off your anchor again by clasping your hands together or whatever your anchor is.

You may need to repeat this process a few times. You'll know you've succeeded when the memory of the event automatically triggers you into a strong, positive state.

That's it! Once you've set the anchor, the next time you face a person or situation that would have previously dragged you down, trigger your positive anchor and see what happens!

Making a Difference!

We now all know the crab story. True? My challenge for us is to discover an opposite of our crab story.

My evening this week with my friends confined to wheelchairs was emotional to the core. It is a group, although founded with the intention to inspire, is a group of people that so often are the crabs to each other...UP UNTIL NOW!

This week's class was filled with enthusiasm and the drive to push back (by almost everyone in the class) the crabs that had been telling them no.

I not only had the opportunity to touch many other heart (and feet), but inspired 2 of the girls to take the teaching out of the classroom and on to the dance floor in a public dancehall last Thursday evening.

The smiles on their faces was the greatest possible rewards as we did our first laps. The hesitation, almost distrust that I had seen in the weeks prior, is now GONE!

Word Play

"Purpose" refers to an action or thought about something that you intend to do. It also refers to being determined and resolute in your intention. Your Mission Statement is an important expression of your Purpose.

Use this time of the year to review and update your Mission Statement and re-commit to your Purpose.

Living It! - The Power of a Smile

James Wagner is an Empower U Graduate and also a practicing Dentist in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has some great words about the importance of a smile in your life. Who better to share this wisdom with us!

"A smile costs nothing, but gives so much. It only takes a moment, but the memory of it can last forever.

"A smile creates happiness in the home, shows friendship and good will in business. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.

"A smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, it must be given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile, so give them one of yours. No one needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give."

Dr. James Wagner, DDS - Awakening Team 337, Adventure Team 152
