Today's Message
- An Interview with Scott V. Black |
The First Leadership Awakening Class in Mexico:
An Interview with Scott V. Black
Let the Journey Continue: Scott, you recently completed the first Leadership Awakening class in Mexico. Can you tell us what it was like to
present a class in such a different culture? Scott V. Black: Wow... What an experience! I went into the class a bit more nervous than usual. Oscar Riveron and Javier
Daville (the two gentlemen that set up this class) met with me on Thursday night and everybody was so excited.
Everybody but me that is I was wondering how much of my dialogue would be understood. 26
individuals, only me training, the first night was shaky. I had to tell them to speak in only English, which was hard. 23 of the participants were Mexican Nationals. But in the end, 26 life-altering experiences. It reminded me that only 7% of communication
is words... a smile is hello in any language!
LJC: You've mentioned the language difference. What was that like, and how did it affect the outcome of the class? SB:
The language barrier was an issue at times. There were certain things that I had to adapt
to, but it wasn't as big of a problem as I thought it would be. It
was quite amusing to me that some of the people spoke less
English half way through the class than they did when class started. Fears,
walls and other barriers cause us to find reasons why we don't understand.
If we don't understand then we have a harder time dealing with
things. With people who speak
English, they use excuses about projection, or lack of sleep,
or "I would never talk to anybody like that"... all kind of excuses. So the language
barrier at times, for one or two, became their "reason". But in the end, they all broke through and it was magical,
beautiful... it was intoxicating!
LJC: What has been the feedback of the students after
this class? How about the companies that sponsored them? SB:
The feedback has been incredible. They are posting on the bulletin board, they are having a reunion in the near future and they are committed to clean up Reynosa, Mexico. It is so incredible to have the message reinforced that we are all the same. We basically want to love and be
loved. We have dreams and fears. We want to provide for our
families... just
like the other human beings around the world. The
feedback from the companies that sent them has also been
very, very positive. Some of the new companies represented in Mexico were, Brunswick, US Marine, Taylor Made Systems, Kimball Electronics, AV Cargo LLC, Maytag, Landis, Nokia, Wells Manufacturing Corp and of course our sponsor, Motores Reynosa.
LJC: Will you be doing more classes in Mexico in the future? SB:
Yes, this is the beginning. We've already scheduled another class
there March 11-13. I have now trained this class in 3
countries USA, Mexico and Canada. I believe Mexico is ripe for our message. You should have been at graduation. Wow!! Oscar Riveron contacted so many families and had the wives and kids there.
There was much emotion and tears. So much for the Machismo!! Watch out
Mexico... there is a change coming, a good change!
LJC: Outside of class what was your experience of being in Mexico? SB:
I stayed in the presidential suite. The same room that President Vincete Fox stayed in. We had
authentic Mexican food the entire time. The staff spoke very little
English, yet took care of every need. They were wonderful.
LJC: It sounds like Empower U is
expanding into some truly exciting new areas. Thank you for
taking the time to share your experience with us!
SB: You are more than welcome.
Note: See today's "Action Steps"
below for more about Scott's reference to only 7% of
communication being the words we speak and practical ways
you can use this information...

Action Steps for Today... |
|
One of the great realizations that came out of the recent
Reynosa, Mexico Leadership Awakening class is the reminder that the great
majority of communication isn't the words we use, but rather all of the other
parts of the communication. Do you know what makes up those other parts of
communication? Here's the breakdown:
|
Body Language: |
55% |
|
Voice Qualities: |
38% |
|
Words Used: |
7% |
As you can see, in most communication it's not what we
say, but how we say it.
In today's Action Steps we ask you to pay particular attention
to the non-verbal parts of your own communication and that of others. Pay
particular attention to tone of voice and posture.
If you find yourself communicating in ways that evoke a
different response than you wanted - in other words, if the person gets angry
or shows hurt feelings, etc. - restate what you really meant while paying
attention to these other parts of the communication.
Conversely, if you notice yourself having less-than-optimal responses
to the communication of others, gently let them know that what they said hurt
you or made you otherwise uncomfortable. They just might be able to find
another, better way to say what they really meant to say.
Just this little bit of paying attention can make a huge difference in the
quality of your relationships in every part of your life!

Making a Difference! |
|
I had rarely given money to street people asking for money. It seemed like they might be scamming me and I usually felt tight and a bit awkward when approached. I dismissed them as quickly and in as low key manner as I could. But in the middle of the summer I decided to change my ways. I gave some money to a guy. It felt satisfying. I didn’t feel used at all.
After the Empower U workshop I saw a gaunt old guy at the side of the road near a stop light with his black and white long haired dog sleeping beside him. He had a sign asking for money. His dog reminded me of Woody, my beloved dog that died last year.
I handed him some money. He thanked me sincerely with a “God bless you, sir.”
“What’s your dog’s name?” I asked.
He suddenly stood up straighter, his chest puffed up and he said proudly, “Earnest T. Bangles!”
“You’re lucky to have him,” I said.
“I know,” he replied.
The light changed. I drove on. I got about 100 yards down the road before I burst into tears.

Word Play |
|
"Communication" is a word we hear
and use often. Even though we all know it refers to the
sharing of information and experiences, sometimes we forget
that communication is largely not primarily a
function of the words we say. As Scott V. Black mentions in his
interview above, only 7% of communication is the words. In
today's "Action Steps" above we give some
practical suggestions for fine-tuning your awareness of
these other parts of the communication process.

"The Crabs
and the Starfish" by Hunter
Jesse |
|
Graduate Hunter Jesse of Team 410 is an excellent
writer and communicator. He has kindly offered to share with
us some of his thoughts in the form of regular contributions
that reflect his own unique take on his post-Awakening
experience. Here is his first offering:
THE CRABS AND THE STARFISH
By Hunter Jesse
The humming, drumming, clicking and moaning song of the amorphous, massed crabs reach for the wind, where I reside, with sharpened claws. I pause long enough to look with intent to learn. I begin a wonderful story in thought about how many creatures are able to play in one box without harming one another. As the dull blue to bright red spots roll through the box, the armor covering their entire body becomes apparent. In turn, I am amazed at how friendly they appear with each one nestled closely to the next. I too would enjoy this warmth every once in a while if only to be friendly. While their song rolls to my "wind"ow perch, the song brings each creature upward, onward, and, for most, downward.
The dance revives me from my recent travels until I see four giant crabs drumming each crab. As first I think it play, the big crab enjoying the time of being big brother or sister beating out the rhythm. But, as each crab rolls upwards, its mouth opens, gasping, and appears to be in desperate need of air, of food. The four giant crabs grab each other crab as it climbs one of four rope ladders fastened to the top of the box. Their claws click, click, click, and click tightly, yanking each leg of its armored brother or sister back to the mass. With a last solid punching, the giant claws pound the armor downward as the crab clicks through the other crabs to the bottom of the box.
I loosen my harness that holds my sail to peer a little closer, to offer a helping hand, and, with a sudden leap upward due to a heartbeat of wind, a traveling starfish that fancied the ride falls from my shoe into the box . . . my outreached hand not long enough to stop the tragedy. My heart rides upward in panic and sails downward in desperation. With purpose, I quickly tighten my harness with newly focused determination, swing the sail, and move closer this time to this disastrous box. Pieces were littered everywhere in the box until, slowly, each piece is lost from sight as it settles to the bottom. In the minutes it took, the starfish became consumed . . . I thought eaten.
Saddened, I watch for hours, transfixed on the image that remains. Crab after crab that seeks higher ground, loses position; sinks lower into the box; and becomes a stepping-stone for the next victim seeking air. The path, the story, and the results remain the same with each second that passes. Even the giant crabs are consumed, in less regularity, but, in their place, four more rise from the mass to step, click, pull, push, and punch the rest of the crabs around the box.
Suddenly, the box jerks and lurches to the side. Quickly, the box rolls the other way with each corner tipping and threatening to pour the contents. The crabs begin to panic and the four giant crabs become twenty-four. The twenty-four fight to keep the contents intact. With bursts from the pieces of starfish that rise to the top, whole new bodies form. One starfish after another grows quickly and, for those that suffer at the gnash of the claws, each new piece becomes a mightier starfish. For the hours I watched, seconds were all that were necessary to overrun the box with starfish. Each starfish eventually lands in the water and swims into the ocean.
Many starfish I recognize as family to my traveling companion. Several starfish climb on my shoes and set sail with me. The box and the crabs . . . probably still floating in the sea . . . probably still wondering what hit them when a bunch of starfish chose to LIVE.
