Today's Message

Focus

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

Focusing our thoughts, words and deeds in a consistent way is sometimes difficult. In this issue, we'll talk a bit about what focus really means and give you some practical suggestions about how you can apply this skill in your everyday life.

You've likely heard the phrase, "Keep your eye on the ball." This is a good metaphor for the process of extended focus on your goals. If you've ever played catch you know that often it's that moment when you are distracted that the ball gets right by you.

The trick with focusing is to remember that by it's very nature, focus excludes a great deal of information. If your focus is on positive outcomes - your dreams, goals, aspirations - then most of what you are not paying attention to is much less important. Everything besides your goals are just distractions from what's really important to you.

Obviously, the more clearly you have your goals in view, the better your focus will be. This is one of the major benefits associated with doing your "5 & 5" exercise every morning. That way, when other things come into your life - things that might have previously distracted you from your goals - you have an easier time determining whether to pay attention to them by asking yourself the question, "Does this enhance or detract from my reaching my goals?"

Another important aspect of focus is that it greatly increases your ability to take action. The common phrase, "Ducks in a row" describes this well. Those of you who've completed Leadership Awakening have a powerful tool to enhance and project your focus - your 'orange  ball.' If you are fortunate enough to have gone through Leadership Adventure, you know about a whole new level of focus, particularly in a team setting.

In summary, focus is really the act of sorting what's important from what isn't. The clearer you are about what is important to you, the better your focus will be and the more you will accomplish in your life!

Want to read more about focusing? If so, then read or re-read the Focus Chapter (chapter 5) of Becoming Your Dreams: Want It. Create It. Live It!

Action Steps for Today - Focusing...

It's easy, once we leave the classroom, to forget some of the tools learned in Leadership Awakening. Because it is such a powerful tool, if you haven't been doing so, spend some time every day focusing on your 'orange ball.' A perfect time to do this is when you are sitting down to do your '5 & 5' in the morning. That way you take care of two important kinds of focusing at the same time. You'll find that this makes a noticeable difference in the quality and power of your '5 & 5' and the rest of your day as well.

Send us an email letting us know how this works for you and what differences you notice when you combine these two potent focusing skills.

Making a Difference!

Have you send in your homework assignment #2 yet? If not, the Time is NOW! We will take some of these assignments and share them in the newsletter periodically. Today, Amy Norman of Team 409 shares with us her 'Making a Difference' experience:

KidZone is an indoor play area for children and their parents located in downtown Truckee. It is nonprofit and was created for children to have a place to play in the winter months when the weather in Truckee can limit outdoor physical exercise. The KidZone Museum has interactive exhibits to stimulate imaginative play, arts and crafts, and indoor lay structure complete with climbing bars and a slide, workshops, classes and special events like parents night out.

I volunteered today not knowing what I would be doing. Mary Ellen was in charge and apologized that the one thing that she really needed help with was cleaning. And she was right. I spent over an hour wiping counters, sweeping, organizing the crafts station, and finished by filling up their paint bottles and restocking supplies. I was glad she really put me to work and I know I made a great effort in making the KidZone cleaner and more organized. I'm looking forward to taking my three-year-old boy there so I can volunteer again and he can play. Mary Ellen informed the that most volunteers bring along their children and I know KidZone can really use the help since it's all volunteer.

They have a parent's night out once a month, which I have also volunteered for. This is a Saturday evening where parents can drop off their children for a nominal fee and have the volunteers watch the children, read to them, lay and complete arts and crafts. It's a chance to give parents a night out without the expensive cost of a babysitter. This is apparently very popular and volunteers are more than welcome and can bring their own children for free.

I'm very excited I chose this activity for my homework because it is is very welcome addition to our community and it truly relies on the help of volunteers. Also, it is something I can do with my child to let him understand the importance of volunteering and helping out your community!

And... IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE ALIVE.

Word Play

Focus means to concentrate attention or energy. In Leadership Awakening you learned the power of focusing your attention on your 'orange ball' and using positive thoughts and words. Think about how you can use focus in your daily life to improve your outcomes...

Living It!

We love to hear about how Graduates are taking their tools from Leadership Awakening and applying them in day-to-day life. David Mitchell of Team 418 recently had the opportunity to apply some of these principles at his work. Here's what happened...

I would like to share with you an experience that happen to me at work today and how our training does work in the real world. I am a Manager in Information Technology and I have 20 Analysts that report to me. Two of them have to work on a very important project, however they can not stand one another. This afternoon I called a team meeting with the both of them and I let them know what I expect. Both of them started attacking one another right away.

That is when I remembered the training. I took a deep breath and told them that they are acting like two crabs in a box, bringing each other down. I told them I will not let myself be pulled down into this box.

By the end of the meeting they both agreed to work and be civil with one another for the duration of the project.

I want everyone to know that the training that we received at Empower U works! I have never felt better.
