"Never forget that life can only be nobly inspired and rightly lived if you take it bravely and gallantly, as a splendid adventure in which you are setting out into an unknown country, to face many a danger, to meet many a joy, to find many a comrade, to win and lose many a battle."
Annie Besant

Class Announcements...

Our Mexico classes are filling rapidly - even though the May 19-21 class in Reynosa is open there are only a few seats left. If you are planning to attend or send someone to Reynosa, please act soon or risk being left out.

Also, if you've been wanting to attend Adventure on the West Coast, please act now to secure your spot in either the May 13-15 or June 3-5 Adventure class in Fernley. There will be no more Adventure classes scheduled on the West Coast after these are filled—and they are filling quickly. The Time is NOW!

Today's Message

The Last Adventure

If you graduated from Leadership Awakening at the Fernley HBS Ranch, you will always remember the feeling you had when you stood on that balcony for the second half of your final exam. If you've attended graduations there, you know the excitement of cheering the new graduates and celebrating with them as they complete those powerful 2 1/2 days.

Also, for the last few years West Coast Leadership Adventure graduates have had the opportunity to experience the magic that is the Fernley Ranch as they took their leadership skills to the next level.

On Sunday afternoon, June 5, 2005, the last Leadership Adventure team ever to attend at the Fernley HBS Ranch will graduate. It is always a special moment when any Adventure class graduates, but this one will be particularly momentous—this will also be the very last class ever to be presented at the Fernley Ranch.

Of course, we'll still be having Leadership Awakening classes on the West Coast in Reno and other locations (see above), but this will be the last class at the original HBS Ranch. Scott, Lindsey and the kids will be moving to the new Dallas HBS Ranch before the end of June.

So... to celebrate all the wonderful breakthroughs, the laughs, the tears and the incredible team-building that has gone on at the original HBS Ranch, on Sunday, June 5, we are throwing a BBQ and farewell bash after the last Adventure class—and you're invited.

Come to re-kindle your passion, visit with fellow graduates and join us in celebrating this rite of passage as Empower U enters the next phase of our evolution. We'd love to see you and your loved ones there for the celebration.

Here are the details:

When: June 5, 2005, beginning at 5:00 pm
What: Farewell BBQ and Party for the Fernley Ranch
Where: 945 N. Clover Lane, Fernley, Nevada (you know, the HBS Ranch!)
Who: Graduates and their families and friends are invited
Cost: No cost - just plan on bringing a side dish (see below)

Empower U will provide all the meat (hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken) as well as drinks (soda, wine, etc.). We are asking you to bring a side dish such as salad, beans, corn on the cob, desserts, etc.

Also, you need to RSVP so that we can make sure to have enough on hand to feed everyone and also so that we can coordinate side dishes.

If you are coming from a long way away, there will be some sleeping options at the Ranch should you want to stay over. Please let us know in advance if you'd like to do that.

To RSVP or for questions, please call the office at (775) 575-2298 or email by clicking here. Come and be a part of this historic celebration.

Action Steps for Today

If you've ever attended any class at the first HBS Ranch in Fernley, Nevada, you won't want to miss the last big bash on Sunday, June 5, 2005. We will celebrate the ending of the final Adventure class on the West Coast as well as the very last class ever at the Fernley Ranch.

Come celebrate with us for the final time at the Ranch as we host a huge BBQ and party for all of our graduates. Please call to let us know you're coming so that we can make sure there's enough food for everyone. Come share this historic moment by calling the office or emailing using the link above.

Making a Difference - Barb Forde, Team 399

I just wanted to update you on my commitment to volunteer at the Oakland Children's Hospital. Tonight was the first orientation. I got to get lost finding the place. I got to ask two strangers how to find it. I definitely got outside my comfort zone by not knowing where I was going and freaking out about being late and possibly missing out and having to wait for a whole month to do it again. (Do you think our EmpowerU staff would appreciate the positive way I am phrasing what seemed like a negative experience?)

Well you know what? I WAS lost. I DID talk to total strangers (and they were both nice). And I arrived EXACTLY on time. What was really cool was after the orientation one of the college students was asking anyone in the group how he could get public transportation back to Cal. It's right on my way home so I offered him a ride. WAY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, but it felt right and it brought back that whole trust exercise that first night. I know it may sound stupid, but he was a young kid and pre-med and I figured if he's going to volunteer at the hospital, he's got to be OK.

I'm still wondering now whatever possessed me to offer him a ride because it's definitely not something I have ever done before. Well, he was a great kid and we chatted the whole way to his frat house and he said that he looked forward to seeing me again at the hospital. I asked what the theme of his frat house was and get this, he said it was to build strong leaders out of men!

Word Play

"Gallantly" means unflinching in battle or action and refers to someone who is valiant, noble or selflessly resolute.

You can see it being used in this way in today's opening quote by Annie Besant.

Up Until Now! by Bill McGregor, Team 422

Up Till Now, the path that was felt normal
Has been exposed as one rutted and full of pot holes.

Up Till Now, the vision that felt clear
Has been exposed as foggy and dark.

Up Till Now, my relations with the people around me that felt special
Has been exposed as being separated and lonely for me.

Up Till Now, the mission I was on felt sufficient
Has been exposed as lacking passion and purpose.

Up Till Now, the good enuff that was good enuff
Has been exposed as NOT EVEN CLOSE!

THAT WAS UP TILL NOW!
