Today's Message

Leadership and Trust

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

Teamwork requires trust. If a leader doesn't have the trust of the rest of the group, nothing gets done effectively. If the leader can't trust one or more of his or her team members, the team is hobbled from the beginning.

This brings up the question, how can we, as leaders, build trust in our teams?

First, it's important to recognize that by it's very nature, trust involves stepping outside of our comfort zone. In fact, it is our own ability to trust that makes it possible for us to take such a step in the first place. This means that you can expect situations where you are cultivating trust to be inherently uncomfortable for you.

You might notice that this same kind of discomfort is also always a part of the creative process and always accompanies great growth.

Depending on your personal history you may be naturally more or less risk-tolerant. If you are creating something wonderful (like a great team or a great family), or if you are looking to grow your company in great ways, there will always be risks involved. And one of these risks is that you will have to choose to trust others to get something great accomplished.

Does this mean that your trust will always be repaid in trustworthy ways? Probably not. However, if you lead by example and make sure that you always act in trustworthy ways, you can be sure that you have the best possible chance of experiencing trustworthy actions from others.

This means that the answer to the question posed at the beginning of this article is that we can foster trust in our teams by first acting in trustworthy ways ourselves. Even though this is no guarantee that others will reciprocate (see today's "Word Play" below), it is one way in which you can lead by example. Those people who will be worthy of your trust will respond in kind, helping you build your vision.

Action Steps for Today - Building Trust

Because trust is crucial to effective teamwork, and acting in trustworthy ways is the catalyst for creating trust in your team, take some time this week examining ways in which you can improve one your own trustworthiness.

One great way to do this is to compare your actions to your words. People always trust someone more when they do what they say they are going to do. Make part of your mission this week to follow-through on your promises and create greater trust with those who are important in your life.

Send us an email at newsletter@empoweru.net about your experiences with trust and team-building at home and at work.

Making a Difference - Kevin Ciccotti

Empower U Graduates take the tools they gain in class and use them every day to make this world a better place for all of us. Kevin Ciccotti recently had the opportunity to use his skills in an unexpected way at the funeral of his wife's grandfather. Here's his story...

The family asked me if I would be willing to deliver the eulogy for Grandpa. How can I put into words the honor and blessing I felt from that request? I had the opportunity to reflect on the life of an honorable and loving man - someone who truly lived his dash like it mattered. I sat and wrote and the words flowed through me like water. I had stories from the children, and reflections on the ways that he touched the lives of those he loved.

The morning of the service I also made a CD with some inspirational music to play, which I brought to the funeral home. When I arrived, I was startled when I looked at the pamphlet in his memory and saw that not only was I delivering the eulogy, I was "officiating" at the service. And then the strangest thing happened. I drew upon my experience at Awakening and I prayed for the wisdom and strength to honor this wonderful man. I went back in my mind to our experience of writing and delivering our own eulogies, and it empowered me.

I stood before family and friends and was privileged to witness to the power of God in our lives, and the spirit of love that Grandpa brought to our lives in a very real and meaningful way. I am not entirely sure how I got through it all, but I know that I was not up there alone. It is an experience that I will never forget. I am blessed and even more inspired than I was before to bring the message to others. I am not sure I would have been able to get through that without having been through Awakening. Yet another sign that God truly gives us what we need to get through life at the times that we need it most.

Word Play

"Reciprocate" means to give mutually or in return. If you've ever been in a relationship where you feel like someone gives back and supports you while you are giving of yourself, you've experienced the effects of this. It always makes the relationship stronger when both people reciprocate.

An example of the use of this word is from today's message in the sentence, "Even though this is no guarantee that others will reciprocate, it is one way in which you can lead by example."

Just a Game - by Hunter Jesse

Before my soccer game, I enter the calm before the storm. I take time to clear my mind; become the absence of thought; and, with heightened anticipation characterized by my rolling stomach, thoughts of the game prominently play with me as the star. When my feet touch the field for warm-up, I practice everything I have thought, but adapt in the moment when my touch offers a different sense of a preconceived environment. In these 15 minutes of warm-up, I live in my “safe” environment where the “falls” of the soccer ball allow me to pick myself up, dust off, and kick the ball again. I focus on the end; I commit myself again to the process of achieving what I want; and I proceed with purpose. I WILL GIVE 100%, which will lead my team to the league trophy.

The whistle blows . . . the game has started . . .

I feel sweat drip; my lungs labor for breath until I hit the rhythm of the game; my legs burn as I dig deeper into the match seeking all opportunities where I will adapt to every inch of the field. Every tackle takes more out of me, but creates another opening to include the team in another pass forward. When the pass connects, I have anticipated the next opening and I find myself available to receive the ball for the shot. The give-and-go never comes. Their counter-attack puts them ahead: 1-0.

I move back into position and hold space to defensively cover. The opposing team looks to exploit the position behind me, but my team has covered the pass. The opposing player commits a foul and, thus, wins my team a free kick. I quickly launch the offensive as I dart down the middle of the field. My teammate sees the opening in their defense and, from the free kick, drops the ball perfectly into my path. I take the ball from one skip onto my chest and drop it into my stride. My right foot unleashes a furious 20 yard shot and, at this point, I am on autopilot. The ball finds the full width of the goal and banks in off the left post. This goal ties the score: 1-1.

The rest of regulation time passes with their speed countered by our defensive strength. The sudden death extra time starts with new passion from our team. The cheers from the sideline fuel our commitment. The ball pops loose in the center as my teammate harries the opposing player with purpose. I sweep around behind him in support. I take the ball with me and draw a defender. I quickly flick it back to the right to find my teammate wide open. He takes the pass with focus and hits it first time . . . the balls slides in near post. We win . . . 2-1 the score.

The whistle blows . . . the game is over . . . we are the Winter League Champions.

After celebrating with the team, I reflect on the vision I created and how I lived it on the field. I smile from the choices I made and how the team synergy dropped two orange balls of laser light focus into a goal that was well defined. In the end, I got to share a winner’s trophy and medal with the team. I know it took my individual passion, purpose, commitment, focus, and vision to win the game; however, all the other individuals contributed to creating a TEAM by sharing in the same vision, purpose, commitment, focus, and passion.

Prayers and Support for a Team Member

Those of you who regularly read the Empower U Team Forums may know about the situation of Andrea Howard of Team 420. She recently learned some devastating news about the health of her unborn daughter. They've discovered a rare chromosome abnormality that means her daughter will likely not live long after birth. As you might imagine, this is a lot for Andrea to deal with.

The outpouring of love, concern and support from Empower U graduates and team members on the Forum has been tremendous. We're asking all of you who are so inclined to keep Andrea in your prayers and offer whatever support and comfort you can. This reminds us all that some dashes are shorter than others...
