Today's Message

Connecting the Dots

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

If you are like most leaders, you have spent a fair amount of time working on your leadership skills. You've read books, listened to tapes, attended seminars, gone through Leadership Awakening and Adventure (you have gone through Adventure, haven't you?) All of these provide you with crucial concepts and skills—tools to help you become more effective at bringing your vision into reality.

These sources of information usually get your attention, motivate you and make you think. Then the information typically fades away over time. Even the powerful learning from Awakening and Adventure eventually fades unless you make a conscious effort to reinforce it on a regular basis. Tools unused lose their edge. This is why we always emphasize practicing your 5 + 5 every day.

I compare this reinforcement process to the childhood activity of drawing by connecting the dots. You probably remember this one - you have a page that shows only dots and it's your task to discover the hidden pattern by connecting the dots together.

How does this apply to your leadership skills? Each of the individual skills and leadership concepts you know are like dots on the page. They make no sense unless you can connect them together meaningfully in your everyday life. This takes time and attention in the same way that making the image appear on a page full of dots does. You can't only look at the dots and imagine what the final result will look like; you must also apply effort to the process of making the connections so that the final picture—your vision—manifests in your life.

In the same way that anything—a plant, a pet, or a relationship—will die if it isn't cared for in the proper way, your leadership skills will atrophy (see today's Word Play below) if you don't spend time connecting them to your daily life. By intentionally making these tools a part of your day to day experience, you will nourish, strengthen and most of all come to embody these skills in every part of your life. This is when you will see your vision come true.

Action Steps for Today - Making the Connection

You already have a large collection of powerful tools at your disposal. Just the concepts from Leadership Awakening and Adventure are enough to make a huge difference in your life. How are you applying these?

Your action steps for today are to review your notes, handouts and workbook from Awakening and/or Adventure or some other favorite source. Select one of the leadership concepts you that you might have overlooked the first time, or that you feel you can better implement into your life. Then, incorporate this into your daily journaling, 5 + 5, prayer or other reinforcing activity.

Once you begin doing this, consciously think about where and how you can use this tool in your everyday activities - in other words, connect this concept to your actions. If you do this every day for a week, you will find that it has already begun making a positive difference. If you like the effect, pick another concept and do the same thing next week!

Making a Difference -

Empower U Graduates take the tools they gain in class and use them every day to make this world a better place for all of us. Recently, Jim Burnett of Team 416 had the opportunity to practice one of the Awakening principles in a simple, yet moving way. Here's Jim's story...

Just a quick note about "your actions give others permission."

I was standing in line at Starbucks in the Atlanta airport with 6-8 civilians and 12-15 soldiers. The first man in line was a civilian and he bought coffee/food for the two soldiers behind him. I did the same for the next 2 soldiers behind me, thanked them for their service to our country and stood back and watched. No soldier had to remove his/her wallet! Every civilian followed the example.

Make a difference in someone's life! It need only be a simple act of kindness.

Word Play

"Atrophy" means to waste away, deteriorate, or shrink. This can refer to physical characteristics and well as non-physical ones, such as intellectual atrophy.

An example of using this word comes from today's message in the sentence, "In the same way that anythinga plant, a pet, a relationshipwill die if it isn't cared for and nourished the proper way, your leadership skills will atrophy if you don't spend time connecting it to your everyday life and actions."

Tools of Choice - by Jim Meurer

There are many” things” we do during the course of an hour, a day, a month, a year and a lifetime. Most of these we pre-qualify in some fashion, either privately or publicly:

  1. I want to

  2. I need to

  3. I have to

  4. I get to

How many choices have you pre-qualified in category #4? Or more appropriately, how many do you choose to pre-qualify in that manner? Hmmm… interesting question.

When I am honest with myself, I discover the answer is not always to my liking. Each of the four choices above is just that, a choice. And each of these choices is an offshoot of what our attitude is at any given moment.

There are so many years of preconception and auto-response wired in all of us that we become strangers to our true selves. The most unique aspect of the gift of Awakening is the chance, the opportunity, to peel back the layers and rediscover who we really are and who we are capable of becoming. From this springs the ability to begin the process of wiping away the old screen, of rewiring the circuitry so that we can present our true selves to the world.

I say begin the process because that is exactly what it is: a beginning. The goal is clear; the target is in our vision and the day-to-day effort to achieve it is underway. The reality is that this journey will last a lifetime. And as with any journey, being prepared and having what you need to successfully navigate each step is vital to reaching the end.

Our attitudes shape our choices, and our choices shape our journey. What shapes our attitudes? Being honest with ourselves and refusing to hide behind the old smokescreens, the old self-deceptions. We cannot truly focus on our vision for the future without being willing to jettison the old baggage.

Also, using the plentiful tools you have been given makes the journey so much more powerful. Would you trek across the desert without water? Would you scale Mount Everest without oxygen? Then why would you undertake the most important journey of your life without the tools needed to get you to your destination?

Want It. Create It. Live It.

No shortcuts. No gimmicks. Just an amazingly simple formula to follow… if you choose!
