Persistence
By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
It's been said that someone who succeeds is different from
someone who fails in one critical way - the person who
succeeds has failed MORE times! The successful person always
keeps moving forward to realize their dreams regardless of
the obstacles they face.
Awakening graduates are familiar with Calvin
Coolidge's quote,
"Nothing in this world can take the
place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more
common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will
not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education
will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The
slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the
problems of the human race."
I had intended to give you my two cents on
the topic of persistence today. In preparing to do so, I ran
across so many great additional quotes on this important
topic that I can think of no better way to cover it than by
sharing them with you. I recommend you save them and
whenever you need a boost, let them inspire you to pick
yourself up, dust yourself off and hit it again!
"All of us have bad luck and good luck.
The man who persists through the bad luck — who keeps
right on going — is the man who is there when the good
luck comes — and is ready to receive it."
~ Robert Collier
"Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but
the ability to start over."
~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
"We are made to persist. That's how we find out who we
are."
~ Tobias Wolff
"The brave and bold persist even against fortune; the
timid and cowardly rush to despair though fear alone."
~ Publius Cornelius
Tacitus "Never let your persistence and
passion turn into stubbornness and ignorance."
~ Anthony D'Angelo
"Flaming enthusiasm, backed by horse sense and
persistence, is the quality that most frequently makes
for success."
~ Dale Carnegie
"That which we persist in doing becomes easier — not
that the nature of the task has changed, but our ability
to do has increased."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
A Winner's Blueprint for Achievement:
BELIEVE while others are doubting.
PLAN while others are playing.
STUDY while others are sleeping.
DECIDE while others are delaying.
PREPARE while others are daydreaming.
BEGIN while others are procrastinating.
WORK while others are wishing.
SAVE while others are wasting.
LISTEN while others are talking.
SMILE while others are frowning.
COMMEND while others are criticizing.
PERSIST while others are quitting."
~ William Arthur Ward
I trust you found these as inspirational as
I did. I also recommend you read Hunter Jesse's article,
"Motivation," further down in this newsletter. He did a
great job of persisting through a tough situation... and
came out ahead. Until next time, remember to always hit it again! |

Action Steps for Today -
Reinforcing Persistence |
|
We all know persistence is a crucial trait for success in
any area of life. That's why in Awakening we repeat the phrase, "Pick
yourself up, dust yourself off and hit it again."
Your actions steps for today are to think about times in the
past where you've successfully persisted against all odds and ultimately
succeeded. Write down these moments in your journal to act as inspirational
reminders that you CAN succeed no matter what. Then, you'll have a place you
can go to remind and recharge yourself at those times in the future when you need it.
Also, if you have a favorite quote or experience relating to
persistence, share it with us by sending it to
newsletter@empoweru.net. |

Making a
Difference - |
|
Empower U Graduates take the tools they gain in class
and use them every day to make this world a better place
for all of us. Kim Miller, Team 425 recently completed
her second homework assignment. Very inspiring!
My project to "give back" was to host a
Mother's Day dinner for three of my neighbors who are
retired and without family on this important day.
Bob and Hope are our neighbors who have family close by
but who had not invited them to do anything to celebrate
Mother's Day. Stan is another neighbor who had recently
moved to town after being forced out of the home she
shared with our neighbor, Elma, after she died. All
three had not been invited anywhere and did not have
plans for that day. All three have a close relationship
with my three children. We had a
wonderful meal - used the good china, etc. My oldest
daughter's birthday was the next day, so we also
celebrated with birthday cake and ice cream. They all
stayed quite a while after lunch and we talked and had a
nice time.
Stan commented when he got up to leave
that he doesn't have family around and had never been
invited out like this before. He was very appreciative
of the dinner and afternoon. Hope commented that her
kids hadn't yet called her to wish her a happy Mother's
Day. I felt very glad about being able to share the meal
and the conversation with them. I have such a great
family - I have been blessed with such a great family -
and it was nice to share it.
My folks were not able to come due to
sickness, so I was glad my children were able to
interact with older individuals. I think the
cross-generational stuff is so important for all
involved. It was simply a nice afternoon and I know my
family made a difference in others' lives - as well as
we were able to share the day with others.
As you give of yourself, you truly get back 10-fold! |

Word Play - The
Meaning of Persistence |
|
The root of the word persistence is the Latin, sistere,
which means, 'to stand firm.' When we persist, we are
standing firm in our convictions and holding to our vision.
This is why it is so crucial for us to have the clearest
possible sense of our deepest convictions. Without this,
persistence becomes difficult or impossible.
An example of
use of the word comes from the Dale Carnegie quote above,
"Flaming enthusiasm, backed by horse sense and
persistence, is the quality that most frequently makes
for success." |

Motivation - by Hunter Jesse |
|
Up until this last week, my role at the
company had been on a downward spiral and my sources of
motivation were dwindling with this ride. I was still giving
my 100%, but finding passion for what I was doing became
challenging because it did not align with the vision of the
department. I found myself making the best of the tasks I
had been given by expanding their impact for the department,
but I had to become my own source of motivation because my
manager was precisely this . . . a manager. With the
uncertainty of my role and with my other sources mentioning
that a layoff was imminent, I was anxious to find another
role inside or outside the company.
During that time, I overheard the Technology Infrastructure
Vice President mention that 4 keys to motivation exist for
employees: Fear, Money, Sex, and Recognition. I put each of
these thoughts into my situation in effort to validate the
truth of these for my experience.
The first, FEAR, was easily understood. For me, the False
Expectation Appearing Real was the loss of my job. Honestly,
however, I know how to deal with FEAR when it appears. Even
though I was not valued in my role and, thus, a termination
prospect, I wasn’t bothered. I simply wanted to be on a team
that cheered me across the finish line and best knew how to
use my skills. Herein lied my motivation to leave this team
. . . not fear, but a desire to find high-performance.
The second, money, has never been key to where I was headed.
More money would always be nice, but, with more money came
more ways to spend it.
Success and happiness were always built upon my efforts and,
in particular, soccer was the one place where the amount of
effort contributed to my levels of success and happiness. I
have always held that I would work for less if the job
became an inspiration through a team that was willing to
live the ups and downs of the company’s heartbeats. Thus, I
have left companies with greater earning potential to be
were I am now.
The third . . . well, the workplace isn’t that for me. Part
of my mission statement was about my wife and how I interact
with her. This, of course, encompassed everything in our
relationship including sex. Somehow, however, I just didn’t
see how this part in the relationship had anything to do
with my job. Whether I lost my job or was upset with my
work, my relationship with her was dependent upon my chosen
attitude during the time I spent with her. My attitude did
affect us before Awakening, but, before Awakening, I was
letting my work determine my attitude. This is a much
different story today with a continual improvement on
yesterday’s relationship.
The fourth key, recognition, did matter. I wanted the
leaders in the company to recognize that I came everyday
with 100% Heart, Body, and Soul.
I wanted to know that I was contributing to the success of
the team and to the overall financial health of the company.
What I was finding was negative recognition. My manager was
telling me that I don’t think you have any skills; I don’t
think you matter; and I don’t like your work. Some of this
was vocalized, but the more powerful statements were made by
his exclusion of my knowledge and my effort. I also knew
that the same VP who made the statements of motivation had
also been key in directing when and how I don’t contribute.
There is a much deeper story here about the interactions
between us over the last 9 months, but I will say that I
demonstrated that I was an active follower and leader on
numerous occasions without recognition. And that was OKAY!
None of this seemed to matter to the VP or manager and,
thus, my role became what it was. Sadly, it also motivated
me to find another position.
I did, however, finally receive positive recognition and
have been working in my new role for one week. Three people
who were responsible for the hiring of the position had seen
my work over the last 4 years. They immediately knew I would
be a fit when they saw my application. The interview became
more about when I will cross the finish line and it also
included a hug. Their statements and actions were about
trust, setting the vision, and demonstrating the passion
involved with their product. I was definitely motivated to
join their team . . . the experience became a mini-Awakened
graduation for me.
The end result . . . The Vice President has resigned with
less than a year’s time at the company. The manager has been
reassigned to new areas. I am still with the company and
pursuing new levels of success through the promotion. My
exit from the team was done without managed parade; however,
the handshakes, the emails, the smiles, the compliments, the
cheers, and the one statement, “you made the work I did
exciting,” all became a summary of the role I played for
people.
I had allowed my emotions to come to life, which provided a
wellspring of intuitive wisdom in navigating the company,
the people, and the opportunities. As I changed, others
around me did as well. Ultimately, through this experience,
I found my motivation comes from LIVING LIFE LIKE IT
MATTERS, BECAUSE IT DOES.

We are asking for volunteers to help get the
Fernley Ranch ready for the move this month. We're planning
a Saturday work party on June 11, 2005. Graduates can come
in Friday, June 10 and stay at the Ranch that night, and
even the following night if necessary. We'll begin work
early on Saturday morning. We'll provide lodging, meals and
great camaraderie; you provide the passion and focus to help
out.
First on the list of priorities is
disassembling the large metal storage shed (the "Under
Destruction" part). There are also
other things that need attention so that the Ranch is ready
for the next tenants. We'll need 20 committed people to
accomplish everything that needs doing.
Please call the Mark Upchurch at the office
(775) 575-2298 to sign up or email by
