Today's Message |
Motivation
Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
What motivates you? Often the answer to that
question becomes more clear when you answer another
question, "What do you want?"
To find the deeper answer to the question
requires getting past superficial desires, down to the core
of your life values and beliefs. This isn't always an easy
task and often takes time. Awakening graduates know it can
sometimes be done more quickly, but where else in life do we
really make the time to explore, experience and more
importantly, reinforce this deeper level of motivation?
In past issues we've talked about ways you
can cultivate and nurture your motivation. For example, one
of the techniques from Awakening is to take time each day to
write in your journal five things for which you are
grateful. This daily repetition powerfully reinforces your
motivation because, when answered honestly and with feeling,
the question always gets you closer to your deepest values.
Another way is to surround yourself with others
who are upbeat, focused and supportive. This a huge
advantage of the Empower U Team Forums (www.empoweru.net/discus_p1/).
There, graduates can call on fellow graduates for support and
encouragement. Whether from your own team or other teams,
people who read the postings are always willing to help relight
your candle of motivation when it
goes out.
Finally, like any skill, motivation requires
repetition to develop into a strong, consistent trait. By
daily choosing activities to reinforce your motivation, you
anchor them into your everyday life and build your ability
to motivate yourself. Each of these reinforcing actions is a
little like adding a piece of paper to a pile - by itself,
one piece of paper doesn't carry much weight, but a ream of
paper weighs something, a case of paper is pretty heavy, and
a palette of paper requires a forklift to move! It takes
time, but it's oh, so worth it! |
|
Action Steps
for Today - Motivating Yourself |
|
Each of us finds value in different ways of motivating
ourselves. The above examples highlight one of the major differences in how
people do this: on the one hand some people get more motivation from inner
work (like journaling), while others find their motivation by spending time
around other motivated people (like using the Forums).
Whichever way you feel most motivated, from inner or outward
reinforcement (or maybe both!), take some time this week to think about one additional thing
you can do to keep your fire of motivation burning brightly. Whether you
recommit to your "5 & 5" or decide you will be more active on the forums, or
any other actions you can take that strengthen your sense of motivation,
make the commitment to yourself to act on this every day without fail.
Before long, you will have the weight of motivation behind you in every
action you take!
Note: See today's "Word Play" below for one more powerful
tip regarding motivation. Also, if you have a favorite quote or experience relating to
motivation, we'd love to hear it. You might even see it in a future
newsletter! You can send it to

Making a
Difference - Sue Whipple |
|
Empower U Graduates take the tools they gain in class
and use them every day to make this world a better place
for all of us. Sue Whipple of Awakening Team 426 and
Adventure Team 173 shared with us how she used her
Empower U skills to help her son raise the bar. Great
work Sue!
Tonight was my son's last baseball game
for the season. As we were getting ready to leave he
asked if I thought he might get the game ball. He hasn't
earned one yet this year. I drop down on my knee grab
him by the shoulders, look into his eyes and tell him,
"I love you so much. You are such an amazing kid and
when you focus, you can reach all your goals in life.
That it is your choice. I can't guarantee you'll get the
game ball but I'll take you for ice cream if you do your
best!"
In the first inning they are out in the field first. He
plays at pitcher (with a coach who pitches) he gets the
1st three guys up at bat out. Just like that. Catches a
pop fly and throws the other two out. Man that kid
brings it when he chooses. The best game I've ever seen
him play! I think my voice truly is gone now. He won the
game ball! The coach says, "How'd that feel?" Brennen
says, "Almost as good as when mom said I was amazing!"
I say it a lot I just didn't say it with passion! Until
now! Thank you Empower U!!!! The gift that just keeps on
giving. Truly A GREAT DAY!!!

Word Play - The
Meaning of "Repetition" |
|
Repetition is the act of repeating or saying
something over in order to learn it. This fact points to
another, namely that the more senses you engage in the
process, the deeper the learning goes. You can use this to amplify the effects of your daily motivation-reinforcing
activities by seeing, feeling, hearing, and even smelling
and tasting the effects that they have on you.
An example of use of the word comes from
today's message in the line, "Finally, like any skill,
motivation requires repetition to develop into a strong,
consistent trait." |

Attitudes and Latitudes - by
Jim Meurer |
|
In a joint-venture research study by Harvard
and Stanford Universities, participants were surveyed and
asked to provide, by percentage points totaling 100%, their
views on the relative importance that skills, knowledge, and
attitude have in determining a person’s professional
performance. How do you think the results tallied up? Take a
moment to think about it and mentally put your guess down
for each of these:
|
SKILLS |
__________ |
|
KNOWLEDGE |
__________ |
|
ATTITUDE |
__________ |
The research findings were as follows:
In the order listed above, they ranked at 5%, 10%, and
85% respectively. To summarize; a person with the basic
skills for the job, and enough knowledge to be worth
consideration for the position, but with an exceptional
attitude, is the most attractive candidate for
employment! A lot has been said about
attitude, and how great an influence it has over our every
day quality of life. Not as much has been said regarding the
influence we have over the attitude we choose. And, while
positive thinking will not always achieve a positive result,
negative thinking will always assure a negative result.
There are a few things worth considering as you choose the
attitude you will carry on any given day:
-
You cannot consistently perform in a
manner that is inconsistent with the way you see
yourself.
-
Philosophy will not work if you
won't. Without effort behind your thoughts, nothing
is going to happen.
-
Learn something each and every day.
-
Failure is an event, not a person.
-
Own your world!
There are many ways we prepare as we
ready ourselves to face the day ahead. Don’t overlook
the most important preparation… your Attitude, HBS!
