"I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot... and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that's precisely why I succeed."
~ Michael Jordan

Success

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

Put the word "success" into Google and you get 209 million hits. Search in Amazon.com and you'll find over 288,000 books on the topic. People are very prolific writing about success because it is so hugely important for all of us!

How can we approach such a universally important topic? What can help us to figure out how to achieve success in our lives? And more importantly, what can we do about it?

The first step is to have a good, clear definition for success - otherwise, how will we know when we get there?

The hard part about defining success is that it means so many different things to different people. For some, it's mostly about money, for others it's related to work, or productivity, or relationships, or family, or making a difference in the lives of others. Given this wide range of definitions, how can we come up with a good way to think about success that will help us achieve the success we want?

One good way to start is to look at the origins of the word. Interestingly, the word success comes from the Latin word, succedere, which means 'to follow.' Because all successful people start with a clearly defined goal, we could say that success is the outcome that follows when we have a clearly defined desire or purpose.

Graduates will immediately recognize in this concept the important question, "What do you want?" It is, after all, your clarity in knowing what you really want, what your highest and best goals are, that will determine your success in any aspect of your life.

There is a great story about this that comes from the Native American tradition:

A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt. He said, "I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one."

The grandson asked him, "Grandfather, which wolf will win the fight in your heart?"

The grandfather answered, "The one I feed."

This is such a great metaphor for how we can succeed in achieving what we want. By consistently thinking about and taking action on those things that 'feed' what we truly want, we are sure to succeed at our goals. At the same time, doing this means that all those other thoughts, beliefs and limitations that used to interfere with becoming our dreams will wither and die because we stop feeding them.

What are some of the tools to help you do this? Daily journaling, doing your "5 & 5," spending time thinking and talking about what you want and, of course, taking concrete actions each day towards your goals. By clarifying and focusing your energy and awareness on what you want, then acting on it, you are sure to succeed!

Action Steps for Today

The concept, "Want It. Create It. Live It." is very powerful for defining and creating success in any area of your life. How are you using this idea to realize your dreams? No matter whether you have let this tool go unused, or are using it every day, you can always do more with it. Here are your action steps for today to enhance using this tool. Don't just read this exercise, do it! It is the only way to gain the benefit.

At some point today, take 5 minutes of completely uninterrupted time and speed write the answer to the question, "What do you want?" You can pick a specific area in your life if you like, or write more generally. Set a timer for 5 minutes and during that time write everything that comes to your mind. It doesn't matter if you've written it before or if it sounds silly, just write as fast as you can! Aim to have at least 100 things written down before your time is up.

Then, go through the list and find those items that really evoke strong positive feelings in you. Put these on your 5 & 5 list for tomorrow and include them in the process of creating your future. Rememberdo this, don't just read it and move on. After all, nobody else can create your success for you, so take action to create what you want now!

Making a Difference - Brenda Jackson, Team 366

Several weeks ago I mention a lady that works in the food court in our building that always had a smile on her face. I stopped one morning and told her how much I appreciated her and I looked forward to seeing her in the morning because she helped make my day brighter.

This morning I stopped to talk to her and asked her name. It's Jessica. Jessica is in her early 40's and a single mom who is just trying to make ends meet. I asked how she was and she said "Much better, thank you for asking". I had not seen her for awhile so I was puzzled at her response and asked what had happened.

Jessica explained that two weeks ago a drunk driver hit her on the freeway and totaled her car. She had some injuries but was healing. Her daughter was with her but was fine. She explained how she was spending huge portion of her pay check on taxi service to come to work. The city bus system doesn't run into town from where she lives. Then her cousin was on the news for strangling her 4 year old daughter to death the week before her accident... my heart went out to her!

Jessica looked at me and said the Lord would take care of her and her daughter because she prayed about it. She said, "You know, people like you see me smiling but not one single person knows the pain I am in. They don't need to know and don't care, they just need my smile". She then thanked me for caring. Wow, did I ever need that lesson!

How many people do we see at church, in our neighborhood, the office and on the street that hide the pain? That moment took me back to the powerful Friday we spent together and how it changed the way I look at people I don't even know. The question is, do I care enough about my fellow man to put what I learned into practice? I know it isn't always an easy thing to do, but it can be so rewarding for both parties.

May God richly bless each of you today...

Word Play

"Prolific" refers to abundant growth, generation or reproduction. It comes from the French word, proles, which means offspring.

You can see it being used in today's message in the sentence, "People are very prolific writing about success because it is so hugely important for all of us!"

Imagine by Jim Meurer

Imagine a person who, over the course of their life, finds themselves with each passing day to have less and less freedom. To slowly, steadily, and inexorably become ever more entrapped and restricted within the confines of the world in which they live. To wake each day with a little less hope of relief, and a little more sense of resignation, of capitulation. Imagine this happening at a pace that is as slow and as steady and as assured as the passing of the seasons.

And then, something changes.

Imagine an opportunity is presented, one that holds promise of relief from the relentlessness of the path that is trod daily. Of a chance to maybe, just maybe, alter the course that has been followed for so very long. With no promises, no assurances other than difficulty and challenge and possibility, imagine this person reaching out in trust and in faith.

Imagine 2-1/2 days of the most intense, grueling, and cathartic experience possible, undergone without cessation. Imagine this person being liberated, one by one, from every link of chain that has, up until now, bound them to their old path. Imagine the brilliance of a new dawn, of the hope and joy of a new beginning, a new destination, a journey of renewal just begun.

Imagine this person on their journey, traveling with a confident stride and marveling at the beauty that is to be found in each passing mile. Imagine the radiance of this person shining so brightly it attracts the curiosity, and ultimately the enthusiasm of others.

Imagine this person encountering a section of path that is broken and strewn with rubble. Imagine this person puzzling over how to navigate and circumvent this obstacle, even while surrounded by cheering throngs and every imaginable tool and device needed to overcome it.

Imagine this person abandoning their tools in the dust, turning their back on the crowds, and returning from whence they came. Imagine this person returning to what is most familiar, what is known, so that when the next challenge is presented, they cannot be expected to be held accountable by anyone… for surely any reasonable person can see their burden…

Or…

Imagine this person looking at the obstacle in their path, reaching for and grasping hold of the multitude of tools that they possess, and using them with confidence to remove whatever was momentarily impeding their progress, as they continue to stride down the path of their Life’s journey, Heart, Body, and Soul.

Imagine.
