Imagination
By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
Want It. Create It. Live It. These are the core principles
that graduates of Leadership Awakening come to deeply
understand in their 2 1/2 day class. These 3 simple ideas
can have a profound impact on the quality of your life, and
of how you achieve your dreams.
The first step in achieving your dreams is knowing what you
want. You may already have a pretty clear idea of what you
want, or maybe you only have a general sense of it. In
either case, this is where you can apply the power of your
imagination to it's fullest. Take a moment to consider exactly how you can
effectively harness the potent force of your imagination.
Your Reticular Activating System (RAS) is the part of your
brain that filters out perceptions and information that
aren't essential to your survival. It lets in only the
information that keeps you alive and helps you reach your
important goals. It operates outside your normal conscious
awareness, as part of your subconscious creativity.
Your RAS
powerfully affects your emotions and the biochemical
reactions within your body. In other words, it is
responsible for your internal states of mind and
experiences. Whether you experience
powerlessness or your most powerful resourceful states, your
RAS is underneath it all, busily creating every response.
The key to working with your RAS is knowing that it only works with the thoughts
and images you give it. It doesn't know what is 'true' or
'false,' but rather responds to the information you give it
as if it were true. The responses that happen in your
body as a result are almost instantaneous.
In other words, if you spend time thinking about and
imagining what could go wrong, how you have failed in the
past or other disempowering thoughts, your RAS creates all
of the internal experiences that go along with being
disempowered. If, on the other hand, you are making pictures
and saying things to yourself that reflect your goals and
aspirations, your deepest desires - what you really want - your RAS gets busy
creating the feelings and other internal states that support
these goals. You feel energized, happy and optimistic.
The effect of these thoughts is profound
and immediate. Even something as simple as using powerless
words such as 'try' or 'can't' has a direct effect on your
internal state of mind and effectiveness. Why else do
professional and Olympic athletes spend hours visualizing
their skills? Why else do actors rehearse their performance?
Why else do the most successful people in the world
visualize and write out their goals in elaborate detail?
Why would you want to treat your own dreams any other way?

Action Steps for Today |
|
Today's action steps are simple. You are going
to harness the power of your imagination!
Here's how:
Take a piece of paper and write one of your
most important goals at the top of it. Make this the goal
that is most important to you right now. Then, divide the
page into five columns, each labeled like so:
|
What it looks like |
What it sounds like |
What it feels like |
What it tastes like |
What it smells like |
| |
|
|
|
|
Then, simply fill in the blanks. The trick
is to do this in a way that is as vivid, rich and complete
as possible. Under what it looks like don't just say, "A Lexus RX 330," say, "A 2005
white Lexus RX 330 with beige leather interior that I am
driving down Main street." Under the 'smell' column, you can
include that new car smell, etc. Make this real, and
in the present tense - not what it will look like,
but rather see it as if it is already true now. This is what
triggers your RAS.
Once you've filled this out in as much
detail as you can, use this page to step into the experience.
Feel like you are there, see things from the place where
this is already true, etc. The optimal time for this is
first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening.
Give your imagination something to really work with and your
dreams will come true much faster!

Making a
Difference - Bryan Parsons, Team 409 |
|
Hey Team! I just put what we learned to use on a call! I
was dispatched to a residence for a verbal domestic
disturbance. It turns out that the argument was between
a 62 year old woman (with a serious drinking problem)
and her daughter who was refusing to get her any more
alcohol.
After I calmed everybody down, I talked to the
elderly lady about what her choices were doing to her
health, her family relations etc. without even thinking,
I started rolling into the "Dash of Life." Did she feel
that she had accomplished everything in life she wanted
to, and did she want to be remembered as having cut her
life short by drinking?
By the time we were through talking, this lady was on
the verge of tears and telling me how indebted to me she
was for helping her change her life.
Thank You Mr. Black!
It's a great day to be alive! |

"Purpose, a Shell Game" by Hunter Jesse |
|
Over the last month, I have felt like I was
playing a shell game. I thought I had great focus, ability
to concentrate, and able to use my intuition to spot the
slight of hand. The person who was driving the game was
supposed to be on my team. By being on the same team, the
shell game was to be easy with me always picking the pea . .
. a constant winner. Turns out, I was playing the wrong game
in the wrong jungle.
I left Awakening in October with a purposeful Mission
Statement. I was going to focus my energy on creating a
house that thrives on 100% happiness. I put my energy into
this effort with the great enthusiasm, which innately
spilled from me. I trusted the process and was ready to move
forward without burden. My wife and kids responded
differently to me. They did see a happier me and, at times,
returned the happiness with the same enthusiasm.
I feel, however, I did not have full buy-in from the team.
Pam didn’t trust me through this process over the last many
months. While I had joined the family’s jungle so that I
could engage in the game and create 100% happiness, she felt
hurt. My new smiles came from a “process” and a “seminar.”
Rather than her being the one who could bring me to this
state of being, she felt I must have been “brainwashed.” She
always had been my confidant and cheerleader in the past.
She couldn’t understand why it took Awakening to bring the
change.
My current state was far from the shells I had left behind,
but those same shells were the ones she used in the game.
Thus, the shell game ensued with my purpose to have a
“happy” house becoming a pea that was in my wife’s control.
She was testing if I could truly spot happiness with the
shells of who I used to be. Being faced with actions that
spurred the shells into wizardry of motion, I realized I was
letting the control of my mood slip. I was allowing my
happiness to belong to her shuffle of the shells, which
tested who I had become.
The game was not malicious. Her intent was not to harm.
Instead, it was used to determine if I was truly focused on
her emotionally. With each shell move, meaning that with
each argument, each difference, each typical “married”
squabble, I was finding that choosing the empty shell of who
I was offered zero feedback on my purpose. I doubled my
focus. I made secondary choices. Different shells picked
with the same result kept me thinking I was not playing the
game very well. I came at the shells from different angles.
Failure in improving my relationship faced me with every
choice. The shells became hollow walls with hollow results.
She simply wasn’t my teammate; at least, that is what I
thought.
In March, I came home with the excitement that only
Adventure brings. I went back to my posted Mission Statement
that day and instinctively many times after Adventure. I
finally saw my relationship with Pam again for the first
time. She wasn’t extending her candle to be lit. In all of
the shuffling of shells, her hands were full, while I had
chosen to not see how empty her hands truly were.
Thus, in this realization, I realized that she didn’t have
the pea. Instead, I had it. Burning brightly at my side, I
had extended my candle far enough for her to see it. She, in
turn, let go of the shells, lifted her eyes to reflect a
perfect blue sparkle, and offered her candle to be lit. On
May 28th, she told me she finally saw me for the man I had
become, truly grown from the boy she had fallen in love with
17 years ago.
Simply, I was playing the wrong game. I was allowing the
past failures to dictate the future mood. By finally
extending myself with all of my best efforts, I showed her
the man I had become over these many months of applying
everything I learned in Awakening and Adventure. In turn, it
was aligned with what she wanted in the relationship.
With Awakening and Adventure, I was able to take my purpose
and my pea with renewed vigor against the walls and the
falls. Every time I fell down, I picked myself up; I dusted
off; and hit the baggage again to eliminate the weight we
carried from 17 years of being friends, lovers, confidants,
and spouses. It worked because I had been honest about my
purpose. In the end, I wanted to be outside the empty shells
and burning brightly in a relationship that has become about
the pea always being visible. Finally, we are living with
100% honesty, which, through honesty and nine months of
effort, 100% happiness is a bar we finally see. |
