The Six Qualities of a Leader
By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
Vision, Purpose, Focus, Passion, Commitment and Teamwork
– these are the six
qualities of a leader. Using these qualities, leaders see
where they're going and have the energy and persistence to
get there. Along the way, they create awesome teams to make
their vision a reality.
How do you rate yourself in each of these six? For example,
are you regularly spending time reviewing and refining your
vision of the future? Those leaders who reach the top of
their fields do this constantly.
What about purpose? When was the last time you took out your
mission statement and read it aloud to yourself? If you did,
were there parts of it that sounded stronger to you than
others? Refining your mission statement to meet your growing
understanding of your purpose is a great way to rekindle
your passion about those things most important to you.
As for focus, you already know that without focus you can be
easily distracted and diverted from your path. With focus,
you can easily address, dismiss or ignore those parts of
your life that are distractions so that you can give more
energy to the important things. After all, nobody lying on
their deathbed ever lamented (see today's Word Play) that
they didn't watch enough TV in their life.
Passion is a tough one for some people. It sometimes seems
difficult for us to keep our passion for life, our work and
our family strong every day. The little things sometimes get
in our way. All the more reason to keep reminding yourself
about what matters most to you. By reinforcing what is most
important, by remembering what you are grateful for in your
life, your passion will always be closer and more readily
expressed.
How about commitment? Once you are clear, focused and
enthusiastic about everything that is important to you, how
do you evaluate or reevaluate your commitments? If you
periodically take a commitment inventory, you will easily
see which commitments are more important and which ones you
can de-emphasize.
For teamwork, ask yourself if you are happy with the quality
of your relationships at home, at work and with friends. See
if there are areas where you can make an effort to improve
the important relationships with your team members in every
area of life.
Working on improving yourself in the six qualities of
leadership makes every other part of your life better. See
today's action steps for a helpful tool to do just that.

Action Steps for Today |
|
To track your progress in living the six
attributes of a leader, we've prepared a downloadable
document that you can use to help see how you're doing.
To download this Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)
document,
click here. You will need the free Adobe Reader to view
and print this file. You can get this here:
www.adobe.com
Once you have the document, print it out and
use it regularly to see how you're doing. You will rate
yourself on each of the six areas on a scale of 1-10, where
10 represents your very best effort.
Use this tool on a regular basis to see how you're doing and
to find ways to do better... after all, true leaders are
always under construction. |

Making a
Difference - Kelly Richardson, Team 434 |
|
Sitting in my chair at my own graduation from Awakening
Team #434 and hearing Ms. Colvin talk about the upcoming
Teen Awakening I knew instantly what I would do for my
Homework Assignment: I would fill that class!! I knew
that using my voice thru my advice column would be a
perfect way to give back to my readers and help them be
aware of something I believed could help many teens. I
also spoke often and with passion to certain patients in
my office (teens as well as adults) I felt would benefit
from this experience. The best way I knew how was to
share my journey and give back to others by sharing a
piece of myself and encouraging them to step out of
their box and trust me.
Writing the column was incredibly easy and it felt
wonderful writing about something I felt so passionate
about. I typically do not respond to any letters from
readers as this sets up possible legal issues or
bantering letters back and forth as well as having a
boundary for my personal time. But I committed to
answering every letter of interest I received about
EmpowerU- regardless of what it had to say. I am sure
this had a positive impact on the many readers who wrote
as they saw me take the time and the interest in what
they had to say. This mutual respect I showed them
hopefully made people feel good about their questions
and they saw me as a person who genuinely cared about
the well-being of their child. It felt very rewarding to
think of them not as just “e-mail names” but as people I
wanted to connect with and wanted to give my time to
before they made an important decision regarding the
most important treasure in their life--- their child.
The full circle of my assignment came on Sunday, July 31
as I sat and watched 19 teenagers (and some pretty tired
looking staff) share their experiences in the exact same
chairs I had sat in a little over one month prior. The
benefits I received were immeasurable because I believe
the impact of what they received is immeasurable as
well. The heartfelt words shared in the letters they
wrote to their parents and the issues they so openly
spoke of made every second of my experience worth it and
my heart was filled with genuine joy to feel I was
somehow responsible for a small part of the many gifts
these teenagers had received that weekend.
What did I gain from giving of myself? More than I ever
thought would happen!!! I gained a peace in seeing these
teenagers reaching out to their parents for support or
acknowledging the value their parents had in their
lives. I gained confidence in myself as an advice
columnist because I was not aware of how many loyal
readers I had and how many of them placed value on what
I what about. I gained joy in seeing 19 happy young
faces walking away with important tools that will be a
part of their everyday life as they get older—tools that
will help them be successful or tools that will help
them as they struggle. I gained insight into my own two
patients worlds as they shared their EmpowerU
experiences with me. Most importantly, I gained belief
in myself that my voice has the power to help other
people and that I can will myself to do anything by
being passionate and focused!
Thank you for the assignment, for your gift of teaching
people to explore their lives and for being a part of my
journey that feels as if it has only just begun!

Word Play |
|
To lament means to cry aloud, to express sorrow.
Similar words include wail, weep, and mourn.
You can see it used in the sentence from today's
message, "After all, nobody lying on their deathbed ever lamented
that they didn't watch enough TV in their life." |

Opportunity Knocks by Jim
Meurer |

“No great man ever complains of want of
opportunity”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson How many
times, if you really step back and look at it objectively,
have you found yourself feeling stymied and frustrated when
things don’t seem to be going as you had planned or hoped or
designed. What is your mind-set at times such as this? The
response that many of us too frequently have is one of
anger, resentment, jealousy, self-pity, or any number of
extraordinarily counterproductive reactions.
Philosophically, we can rationalize and understand that
these types of responses will only move us further away from
our goal or objective, yet we often appear to be almost
helplessly locked into the default negative responses. This
certainly does not mean we are somehow so inherently flawed
that we are destined to repeat this pattern forever, but
merely that we are fallible humans who need to work and to
train ourselves to alter this outcome. Every
Awakening graduate learns how profoundly a simple word can
effect an action, both positively and negatively. Our mind
is incredibly powerful in the manner in which it can
influence physical responses…how it tells the body to react.
You may have heard the old adage that, when you are
confronted with a “problem”, substitute the word
“opportunity” in it’s place. Just this simple act, this
small re-frame, will go a long way toward an improved
outcome. By consciously choosing to step away from the
default reactions and to look at the circumstances with a
fresh perspective, you give yourself permission to seek out
an opportunity that may have otherwise been masked behind
powerless thoughts and words and deeds.
Consider Thomas Edison: in 1914 a fire swept through his
factory, destroying everything. There was not nearly
sufficient enough insurance to cover the damages. While
walking through the ruins with his young son Charles, he
commented to him “There is great value in disaster. All our
mistakes have been burned up. Thank God we can start anew”.
Three weeks later, Edison unveiled the phonograph to the
world. Think about that! |
