Today's Message

Giving Back and Inspiring Us All

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

If you've been surfing the Empower U Forums, you've no doubt heard about the "Cali Four," a group of Empower U Graduates who are raising in the bar on the concept of "Givers Gain."

For those who don't yet know, the team of Jim Meurer, Jeremy Gold, Al Gold, and Efren Fuentes have spearheaded a very substantial relief effort for those displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

They, along with the help of hundreds of other volunteers in the Sacramento area, gathered 4 large truckloads of supplies and have driven them to the affected areas. They are there now helping distribute the relief supplies.

Here are just some of the comments from the boards about this effort:

Yesterday my family and I went to Air Systems in Sacramento to help pack and load supplies for the people of the hurricane disaster. What a turn out!! I have never seen so many bags of clothing, food and supplies in one building in my life. The girls and I spent 8 hours packing gallon zip lock bags full of toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, washcloths, and all other items that are needed for personal hygiene. We also spent the last 2 hours packing food. Gary spent the day organizing, moving and loading supplies. We had people coming in from nowhere to help us as much as they could. A basketball team from Sac. had also showed up to help. What a day for all who were involved, and what TEAM WORK!
                                  ~ Brigitte Vaine

A boy and his father donated a bunch of stuffed animals, some kids clothes and books. The little boy was probably about 7-8 years old. His dad told us that the boy was watching the news early on Saturday morning and a young girl was being shown asking for help. The boy woke his father up immediately and said they had to help the girl right away. So the boy started taking his own clothes out of his closet and getting his toys and books ready to donate. The dad had a hard time telling his son that he had to keep some clothes for himself. So they compromised and this boy brought his own things down and wanted to make sure they would be taken to the kids in Louisiana. What a selfless act of kindness by one so young. I know that boy will remember the day he gave his own things to help others. I pray that his love and kindness stays a very large part of his life.
                                  ~ Barb Forde

I am so proud to be a part of this Empower U family. The impact that all of you and the rest of the teams have made in my life is immeasurable. I am continually inspired and moved to action by the examples that you have set.
                                  ~ Kevin Ciccotti

All of us at Empower U are inspired and encouraged by the commitment of time and energy given by all those associated with this project. We encourage you to continue to support related work through whatever relief agency you prefer. You can follow the progress of this powerful team on their web site at www.califour.org.

Action Steps for Today

Today's action steps are very straightforward. Please ask yourself 2 questions:

How would I feel if my home and belongings were suddenly destroyed?

What more can I do to help those whose lives were thrown into turmoil by this disaster?

Once you have your 2 answers, do what your heart tells you to do...

Making a Difference -  Debbie Van Breemen, Team 434

Making a positive difference in our lives and the lives of others is the core tenet of what we do at Empower U. Here's an example of one of our graduates taking the training and making a difference in the world:

I contacted St. John's women and children's homeless shelter about volunteer work. I originally thought that I would work one time, but after touring the facility and seeing the faces of women and children living there, I decided to become a regular volunteer.

On my initial visit, I was disoriented at first and it took a little while to understand how everything worked. I will be helping out in the children's playroom while the adult residents complete their chores. I saw amazing and beautiful children playing, laughing and having a great time. Due to the heat, the kids were able to have a water fight outside on the playground. They had a blast! What really struck me was that you could have moved this scene to any playground and you would have never known that these children were homeless or that their mothers had fallen on hard times.

I believe that I had a minor impact on the children and their parents at that point. That realization made my decision to be more involved and have a much bigger positive impact. The biggest benefit I received was for myself. I was smiling and enjoying watching the kids. It also made me realize that some of my issues and concerns are so minor as compared to what this community of people is up against

I am grateful that this assignment encouraged me to make a decision to do something!!!

I am looking forward to going back next Saturday!

Word Play

Tenet means: A principle, belief, or doctrine generally held to be true; especially : one held in common by members of an organization, group, movement, or profession.

You can see an example of its use in today's "Make a Difference" article in the sentence, "Making a positive difference in our lives and the lives of others is the core tenet of what we do at Empower U."

Re-Frame: Skill or Attitude? by Jim Meurer

I have pondered the concept of re-framing over and over, and I truly believe it to be one of the single most significant conscious actions a person can take. I have also pondered whether this act is a skill or an attitude, and I believe I have found the answer: it is both!

First, let us consider what it is to re-frame. Generally, it is the act of altering one’s response to a given circumstance, sometimes after the initial response has already been given, and sometimes before the initial reaction is made public. As the ability to re-frame grows, so too grows the ability to make it happen internally, instead of retracting the 1st response and having to take a “do over”. The goal of course is to escape the automatic responses that are so often hardwired into us, and to see each situation with a renewed perspective so that we can respond in the manner that our best “George Bernard Shaw” would.

One of my favorite films is a 50’s classic called “12 Angry Men”. In this film, which takes place exclusively in a jury room, twelve men are to decide the fate of a young man accused of killing his father. This boy and his father lived in the tenements in New York City in an impoverished neighborhood, and the circumstances of the setting had the makings of an open and shut case. However, by virtue of one man’s determination to not accept a default opinion, his willingness to “re-frame” the issue, the table is set for a very powerful story to be told. It did not occur to me until after Awakening just how compelling a story this film indeed tells, and how significant an example of the concept of re-framing. This film demonstrates, in a particularly unique and powerful manner, how our pre-conceived notions and opinions and prejudices can so easily blind us to what is truly taking place.

How many times during the course of a day does the opportunity present itself to re-frame? When I think about it, the possibilities are endless. When I further think about it, I know that it is equal parts attitude and skill. I absolutely have to have the proper attitude in place to be receptive to the concept, and I absolutely have to hone the skills required to allow me to complete the action. And equally as important, I have to accept that I will fail often, for this is what it means to be Under Construction.

Every conscious thought we have, every opinion we form, and every decision we make contains an opportunity to use the tools we possess in chasing the goal to be the best we can be. And practicing the art of re-framing is one of the daily disciplines we can work on in pursuit of that goal.

Set a personal goal today to consciously avoid the old standard auto-responses. Practice the “art” of re-framing over the next week…you may just be surprised about the results!
