Embracing Change, Part 1:
A Tutorial on the New Empower U Forums

Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

If you've visited the Empower U Forums lately, you may have been surprised to notice that they have changed dramatically. Not only has the look of the Forums been updated to match the new site format, but the way the Forums work is also different. Because we've received lots of questions about how to use the new system, we're devoting the next few issues to a tutorial that will help you feel right at home when you post.

To get to the new Forum page, you'll need to click on the upper menu on any Empower U web page (next to the flying eagle). The link says, "MSG BOARDS".

You'll find yourself on the Forum home page where you'll see several different boxes with links. In today's tutorial, we'll talk about the light blue box on the left, just below the Empower U logo

The light blue box is the master navigation bar. Here you can always come back to the Forum home page by clicking on either "Discussion" or "Topics".

The next link down will show all "New Messages" since you last logged in, assuming you have registered and logged in. If you're not logged in, this will display the posts for the past 24 hours.

The light blue area also has other important links, including a keyword search, a contact page and a link to edit your profile once you've registered.

Next down from that is the "Instant Registration" link. We'll come back to this one in a moment.

Below that, under "Documentation," are links to the detailed user information about the Forum software. This is a great resource to review when you want to really get the most out of your Forum experience.

Finally, at the bottom of the light blue box, is the "Old Forum (read only)" link. As you might guess, when you click on this link you can see all the posts from the old forum. The old Forum is in archive mode and you will not be able to post there.

Now let's talk about registration. At the moment, you can still post to the Forum without registering. The main difference you'll notice about this is that unless you are logged in, your post won't show until we approve it. Without logging in, your post could take up to 12 hours to be approved. Registered users who log in will have their posts show immediately.

If you had an account on the old Forum, we've done our best to transfer your user name and password to the new Forum. Some people have reported being unable to access their account. If you find this to be true for you, simply create a new account. Think of it as a fresh start...

To register, click on the "Instant Registration" link in the light blue box. You'll be asked to read and agree to the Empower U Forum Rules before continuing. On the next screen, you can enter a user name of your choice (your real name or a 'screen' name), and a password. For security, make your password difficult to guess, but easy for you to remember. You will also be asked to enter a valid email address. This is important because you will receive a confirmation email that you must reply to in order to complete the registration process. You will not be able to post until you reply to this email.

Once you've replied to the email, you can log into the Forum and take advantage of all its advanced features.

In our next issue we'll talk about how to view recent posts, update your profile, navigate easily on the site and use other advanced features. You won't want to miss it!

Action Steps for Today

If you haven't yet, take a moment to follow the easy steps outlined above and register on the new Empower U Forum.

Making a Difference - Sue Whipple

It's a great day!

I am thankful!

For the taxes I pay...
Because it means I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party...
Because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug...
Because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work...
Because it means I am out in the sunshine.

For the lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing...
Because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government...
Because it means we have freedom of speech...

For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot...
Because it means I am capable of walking

And I have been blessed! With transportation.

For my huge a/c or heating bill...
Because it means I am cool or warm.

For the lady behind me in church who sings off key...
Because it means I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing...
Because it means I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day…
Because it means I have been capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours…
Because it means I am alive.

And finally, for too much e-mail...
Because it means I have friends who are thinking of me.

Live well, Laugh often, and Love with all your HEART BODY AND SOUL!

Word Play

"Change" seems like it is a simple word, one that we all understand. However, just think about the fact that Merriam-Webster's Unabridged Dictionary has no less than 7 main definitions for it, and 27 sub-definitions! It may be more complex than we thought!

The definition most appropriate for today's message, and perhaps for the entire Empower U Leadership Experience, is: "To become different in one or more respects without becoming something else." It's a kind of shifting gears to function at a higher level. Hopefully, you are in the process of embracing change and using your tools to make every day a great day to be alive!

CANOPY by Hunter Jesse

"Get out of here!" I yelled.
"Get out of here!" I yelled again at her back.
"Get out ..." my voice trailed to an inaudible slur of disappointment, "of here..." as the door closed.

20 years later I am looking at the mold filled pizza crust in torn boxes and the plastic and aluminum waste of caffeinated highs. If it weren't for my inheritance, Blockbuster would shut down my life and reopen the doors as a vintage retail outlet based on the classic titles I still have in DVD. I just can't or won't give up on modern day old school. Even the wear of my butt on the leather desk chair, that has been conveniently parked in front of the entertainment center, remains comfortable. An old hat for a worn circumstance.

The monitor rang, again, for the 30th time. I decided I can't minimize again even though this part of Star Wars, where Yoda says "Do or Do Not", aches of lost causes. "Huh?" I answered.

"Where are you?" the young, effeminate voice, stated confidently and maturely.

"Same place I always am..." failing to add my affection of 'dear.'

"Sitting. You are supposed to pick up the kids."

"Again... is it Sunday or Mond... "

"Tuesday, Dad. Tuesday." I could hear the hold back of tears.

"Sorry, I missed 'em. I'll be back there next Tuesday." I scratched the tip of my finger with the maximize button.

"Sure Dad. I'll ask Mom...she is only a heartbeat away from them."

"Good. She always has been even when she walked out the door. You know you never came back." I glanced at the space between the slats allowing a new shadow to be cast across the cardboard pyramid. "Why, sweetie?"

"Dad, I have offered you the same answer time and time again. But, here... something you taught me forever ago... What time is it?"

I cried, "Time is now, sweetie."

"What day is it?" she stated quickly.

"It's a great day to be alive." I replied softly with a wipe of my nose. The blip on screen faded along with her mother's blue eyes.

I pulled my t-shirt up to my eyes and soaked the sauce stain a little further down my chest.

"It's a great day to be alive..." parted my lips again. I kicked the dinner to the door. I maximized Star Wars with a purposeful glance at the gray button, closed my eyes, and watched electrostatic levitation fail me, yet again, for the last time.
