Embracing Change, Part 2:
A Tutorial on the New Empower U Forums
Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
Last time we talked about the light blue menu box on the
left side of the new Forums. If you haven't been to the new
Forums before, click on the
upper menu on any Empower U web page (next to the flying
eagle). The link says, "MSG BOARDS". You'll find yourself on the Forum home page where you'll
see several different boxes with links.
In today's tutorial,
we'll talk about the main Empower U Forum box; it's the
wide rectangular box just below the Empower U Eagle.
If you've already registered (we encourage you to
register - see our
last issue to learn how), put your user name
and password to log in here. Once you log in for the first
time, you will automatically be taken to the User Control
Panel (User CP), where you can update your profile and other
useful information. If you want to change your profile at
any time, use the "User CP" link in the main box.
The other links in this box take you to the "FAQ"
(short for "Frequently Asked Questions"), the list of
registered members ("Members List"), the Calendar
(we're not currently using this function), the "Search"
box, and "New Posts".
"New Posts" is great because it shows you all the
posts that have happened since you last logged in. If you're
looking for who has replied to one of your posts, or to see
which forums are active, this is where you'll click. If you
don't log in, you can still see the most recent posts by
clicking on the "Today's Posts" link that will be there
instead. For
now, click on the "User CP" link. From this window,
you can edit your signature, change your email address and
password, edit your profile and other options. The "Edit
Profile" link allows you to make changes in the
information other users can see about you. It's a great way
to share a bit about yourself. Another useful feature of
the Main Forum Box is the ability to navigate easily from
wherever you are. For example, if you are on a particular
Team board, if you look at the upper left corner of the Main
Forum Box, you'll see the name of the board in black, with
other links above it in blue. Each of these other links will
take you to the indicated page, including all the way back
to the Home Page of the Forums. This is an easy way to get
back to pages you were viewing previously. In the next lesson, we will talk about the "Edit
Options" link. We'll cover how
to 'subscribe' to various forums, plus some other cool
advanced features. You won't want to miss it! |

Making a
Difference - Bill McGregor, Team 422 |
|
While on vacation my family had a powerful experience that
showed the importance of living your dash to the fullest
cause you don't know when it will end. The dash for a
young man named Adam came to an end on 7/28/05 at the
age of 26.
He was surfing the waves near Bodega Bay CA. I was
sitting on the beach with the family when I heard a call
for help, I saw a man in the water with a surf board
then I saw the dark shadow nearby. It was not a shark,
it was Adam. Face down underwater.
I jumped in to the water to assist in bringing him to
shore. Robin help me pull him on shore and started life
rescue procedures. He was blue and not breathing. Robin
found a pulse and once she rolled him to his side he
spit water and started to breath on his own. Robin was a
beautiful picture of calm directed focus, calling out
what to do and taking charge. The kids ran to the
parking lot in search of assistance to call 911.
After about 10 minutes paramedics arrived and took
over. He was still breathing when they took him, but he
never appeared to regain consciousness. We pray and
reflected on who was this man that we had just helped.
Then we noticed a woman walking down the beach like
she was looking for someone. Oh man my heart dropped
when she said she was looking for her son. Her
description matched that of our surfer. Needless to say
she was panicked. She left us to go to the ranger
station for more information. At this time no one knew
who this guy was. Glad for her, this was not her son.
Adam died before they were able to load him on to the
life flight that had come for him. We found his truck in
the parking lot. We knew we had the right one because of
the picture of him and a girl on the visor. Based on
information discovered talking to authorities he may
have been epileptic and was driving on a revoked
license. By all signs surfing was a passion in his life.
It is my prayer that he has found that perfect wave,
that beautiful ride that is found in the Lord. |

Word Play |
|
Today's word is "brooked," which means "to put up with."
You can see it used in today's article by Jim Meurer in the
sentence, "He set the bar to a standard that was unbending, and he
brooked no argument about it." |

A Leader by Jim Meurer |
|
I met a Leader the other day, a man named Samuel E. Harris.
Mr. Harris is the principal at Martin Luther King Jr.
Junior High School in the Grant School District in
Sacramento. The school is situated in an impoverished
neighborhood where crime is high and employment is low. 95%
of his students are from welfare families… and 90% the
students from single parent households or being raised by a
grandparent.
Mr. Harris was born 58 years ago in Birmingham Alabama
and was raised by a mother who worked as a maid in an
affluent household. Anyone who knows anything about American
history in the Deep South at that particular time can
appreciate the challenges Sam Harris overcame. In his words,
“I’ve seen it all”. But Sam had the benefit of good role
models at home and at school. His mother taught him a strong
work ethic, right from wrong, and to respect all people at
all times. He was equally fortunate to have been tutored by
caring and committed teachers during his education.
And so Sam Harris became a man, and spent a long and full
career in the Armed Forces where he eventually retired as
Colonel Harris. Immediately after retiring, Colonel Harris
went into education, settled in Sacramento, and worked as
the vice-principal at Grant High School in a job he loved.
Five years ago, the superintendent of the district
approached him and asked if he would consider taking on the
principal’s position at MLK junior high. This being a school
that, in the superintendent’s view, was “dying”, and had not
had a principal stay at the helm for more that three years
in a row.
Colonel Harris thought about it. He thought about how
content he was and how much he loved his job and his school.
He thought about the difficulties inherent in seeking to
revive a school that was that far-gone…how much of a
personal toll it would take, how much commitment. And then
he thought of the children. And then his decision was made.
In the ensuing five years, Sam Harris overhauled that
school. He set the bar to a standard that was unbending, and
he brooked no argument about it. From the most senior
educational staff to the custodial staff his message was
clear: our purpose here is to serve these children and to
provide them an education. We will focus on that purpose and
we will act as a team to achieve the vision of rebuilding
this school. If you do not have the passion and the
commitment to do so, you are welcome to leave.
Today, MLK junior high school stands as a testament to
what can be accomplished when those six words are put into
practice. What was once a place where education
professionals avoided is now fully staffed with impassioned
educators. What once was a run down and dirty place in need
of repair everywhere is now a neat and trim and orderly
campus that is cared for by committed staff, and where the
students are held accountable for maintaining cleanliness.
What once was a school where indifferent teachers withdrew,
turned on a video, and allowed the students to go wild is
now a structured environment where both the staff and the
students wear “uniforms” in the way of matching colors, and
respect is not just encouraged, but insisted upon.
I was able to spend a little time with Colonel Harris and
I can tell you this: here is a man who is a Leader in every
sense of the word. He leads by example, not by an iron fist.
He leads with consensus, not by dictate. He definitely sets
a vision and a mandate, yet he encourages and enables and
supports and empowers his staff to excel.
I am grateful that there are people in education who are
willing to give so selflessly for today’s youth. Our
educators can have unimaginable influence on our children’s
outcome, both good and bad. The good ones are priceless, and
are to be applauded. But without Leaders to guide and shape
the journey, we won’t have the successes we need. We won’t
have the Martin Luther King jr. stories to tell.
And so I met a man named Samuel E. Harris, a Leader. What
will you do today to share your Leadership with the World?
This is a question we all need to ask ourselves every day! |
