Today's Message

A Case Study in Teamwork

One company regularly sending people through Leadership Awakening is Nugget Markets. Based in Woodland, California, this grocery chain has sent almost 1/5 of their 1,100 employees through the training, with some also going on to complete Leadership Adventure. As a company, they are constantly working to improve the quality of their work environment and their service to their customers.

Nugget understands that the success of any company is based on the focus and commitment of their team. They've made a serious commitment to foster a powerful sense of teamwork and loyalty in those who work there, which has also increased the satisfaction of their customers and grown their business over the past few years. This is true visionary thinking.

And the results are showing!

For the first time ever this year they are ranked No. 33 on the Fortune Magazine 2005 list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. They are also ranked No. 12 among what Fortune listed as "smaller companies."

You can see the article in the Sacramento Business Journal announcing this honor by clicking the following link:

http://sacramento.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2006/01/09/daily3.html

We want to add our big "Yes!" to all of the accolades (see today's Word Play) Nugget is receiving for their commitment to make a difference in the lives of their employees and ultimately of their customers and their bottom line.

Great Work Nugget Markets!

Action Steps for Today

Nugget Markets understands that the success of it's business comes from the commitment and vision of it's employees. This is why they've sent so many to attend Awakening and Adventure. And there are still more coming.

If you run a business, or supervise other employees, take a moment to think about how you can work towards making your work environment even more supportive to bring out the best in each of them.

If you do you'll find that you will improve the attitude, productivity and resulting customer satisfaction of your company. You might even want to send a few more of your top management through Awakening to deepen the culture of commitment...

Making a Difference - Toni Silva, Team 402

What I did for my experience may be different than most. Since my life is changing, I chose to share myself through my garden and vegetables. I put together vegetable baskets and gave them out to 6 families. I have been able to make these families happy several times now with these baskets.

It was powerful, especially sharing with one family who's mom recently had colon cancer surgery. I have sent her a written note and do send my thoughts to her through her husband. I have wanted to see her, but she is not up to it yet. I am letting her know I care. It made me feel good to do this and it made me once again realize how lucky I really am. My problems are smaller by far.

Impact: Well, it's amazing to see how people react and appreciate some of the little things in life. The efforts to keep my garden alive knowing that I am using it to share with them... it's hard to explain. They are so grateful and happy to receive fresh grown vegetables and like the fact that I thought of them. They look into the baskets like children to see what is in there.

The benefits have been that I feel good and useful! I felt great and I still do feel good because I am giving 2 of them more tomorrow. When I call them in the morning to let them know I have some more they will be excited again. I make the smile and feel good because I care about them. It's a small gesture on my part, and yet it is really big to them. I just gave one family some produce tonight... I called them up and they came over a few hours later. I am making people happy and it feels good. They don't realize that I am getting more out of it than they are! Their smiles tell it all.

Word Play

"Accolade" means a mark of acknowledgment. It comes from the French word meaning 'embrace' and refers to the ceremonial embrace and kiss on both cheeks more common in Europe to celebrate great accomplishment.

You can see the word used in today's article in the sentence, "We want to add our big "Yes!" to all of the accolades Nugget is receiving for their commitment to make a difference in the lives of their employees and ultimately of their customers."

A Post-Graduation Story by Jeremy Rickles

I have a story to share with all of you. Most of us, if not all, received cards from our friends and co-workers to help through the process. While you read this, I want you to listen for who I am talking about; the answer may surprise you.

As you know, my father, sister-in-law, and two of my beautiful nieces were present at our graduation. One of the two, Marissa, first came into our family as a foster child at the age of 12. She had been in and out of homes for over 10 years. From day one she called me Uncle Jeremy and it was clear that she needed only one thing in her life at that moment to survive - love. I always have treated her no different than any of my other nieces who are my direct relatives. She never really had had a solid home with people she can trust and true love in the household. After a long process, she and her sister Demetra (who was not able to make it to our ceremony) were legally adopted by my brother and his wife on November 19, 2005, one day after my 29th birthday.

After our graduation ceremony, my sister-in-law invited me to their house for a salmon dinner. When I arrived Marissa gave me a hand-made card. On the front she drew a giant star with a smaller star inside of it, a smaller star inside that one, and a final tiny star inside that one. On the back was a giant heart with the words:

"I Love
You
So
Much"

written inside of it. she wrote underneath it, "Illustrated by: Marissa Rickles". This was all very colorful. So I open it and on the left flap it said,

"JEREMY

WE

LOVE

YOU".

On the right flap it reads...

"We are so proud
of you and your
new leadership.
You have changed
for the best.

Love,
The Rickles girls"

I thanked her, hugged her, and asked her if she made this all on her own and she said she did. So we all ate our dinner, my father and my sister-in-law (who I will refer to from this point as my sister) sat with me at the table while the Rickles girls sat on the couch and watched TV.

After some conversation about the things I had learned my sister said to me that after I gave my last speech I which I thanked Nugget Market, you (my teammates and friends), and my family, Marissa told her mother, "I'm shocked! He's changed!" Upon hearing this I paused in our conversation and asked Marissa to come to the table.

I asked her, "your mother said you told her you were shocked. Why were you shocked?" She said, "Because you were a whole different person!" Then I told her about the 11 cards I received from my co-workers before I went to Empower U. I went into detail about some of the contents of these cards. Words of inspiration, support, and kindness. Then I turned to her and said, "I could have one hundred of those cards from my co-workers, but in total they could never mean as much to me as the one you gave me tonight."

We both broke into massive tears and she wrapped herself around my neck so tightly I thought I would choke! I whispered in her ear something that I know she and I will never forget. I said, "Marissa, you became a part of my family the second you walked through our doors and I love you more than anything. I didn't know how much that meant to me up until now." If I went through Empower U just for that one moment, it held the worth of the universe to me.

So who is this story about? Think about it. My niece? Me? My dinner with my family? Maybe about the card itself that held so much meaning? No.

It is story is about the 18 strangers who came together as a team to make that moment possible. I made things happen for myself that week. I chose to give one hundred percent. Me. I did it. But I could not have done it without the love, support, kindness, dedication, emotion, passion, and commitment that you all shared with me.

So, Team 454. Our motto is We Want More. I now have more and I will continue to have more thanks to all of you. With passion I say to you very simply, "Thank You."
