Today's Message |
Change
Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
Ask people what they want (you know, "What do you want?")
and once they stop telling you what they don't want
they'll often come up with a list of things they feel are
missing in their lives.
Yet year after year you can observe these same people and
see that for most of them nothing changes. No matter how
much they say they want these things, they never take
action to achieve them.
You may have experienced this yourself, and certainly you
have people in your life who don't ever get beyond the
'wanna-be' stage of the change process. They never take
steps to create their dreams and then live them.
Why not? What keeps people from diving headlong into the
process of living their dreams?
The answer is simple: fear.
What is it about change that's so scary? Is it that you'd
be stepping into the unknown? Is it old programming from the
past? Is it just wanting to stay in your comfort zone?
Truthfully, it's probably all of these things. And for
each person the exact details will be different. For
example, when you were young you might have been told in no
uncertain terms never to talk to strangers or something bad
would happen. While that was a good thing at age 5, it you
might have generalized this out to having a hard time
talking in front of a group as an adult (speeches anyone?).
Or, like most of us, you might have grown up thinking
that the level of success and affluence your parents had was
'normal.' As a result you never considered thinking beyond
that to visualize what might be possible if you imagined
bigger.
And, of course, isn't is so much easier to settle for
'good 'nuff'? If you've already gone through Awakening, you
know the flaw in that way of thinking...
In Leadership Adventure, we present a process of how to
step outside of your comfort zone and address change
intelligently. The idea is simple: we all have a comfort
zone where we feel safe and secure; a place where everything
is familiar. Think of this as the center circle of 3
concentric circles. We spend most of our lives here.
The next circle out represents the unknown. Walking into
Leadership Awakening was probably an example of that for
you. Similarly, opening a new business, asking for a raise,
or proposing a new project to the boss would all be examples
of this level. There is fear there, but not so much that you
can't face it if you make up your mind that it's important.
The outermost circle is the area of panic. This is the
area where you definitely don't want to go. Quitting your
job without any plans about how to support your family or
skydiving without a parachute might be examples of this
level.
The trick to expanding your world and getting what you
want lies in your willingness to venture from the innermost
'comfort zone' circle into the next circle, the circle of
fear, but not going so far that you end up in the
panic zone. This is intelligent fear management and creative
change. This is the area where you are able to expand your
possibilities, grow as a person and, ultimately, create an
even bigger comfort zone.
See today's Action Step for more ideas on managing
change. |

Action Steps for Today |
|
Today's action step is for you to think about the one
project you've been putting off (up until now) because it
represents a change in your life. Whether it is starting a
side business for extra income, reaching out to a friend or
family member with whom you've become estranged, or changing
an old belief about yourself, there is something that is
pending for you. Once you identify this area of your life,
use the 3 circle metaphor from today's message to think
about where you are now (your comfort zone), and where you
need to go to have this change happen (your fear zone).
Then, decide what action you will take to face whatever
has held you back. Choose to step over the line and expand
your world. Decide when you will take this action - day and
time - and then commit yourself to do it. By using
this step-by-step approach, you will find that you break
down your previous limitations and expand your comfort zone.
But only if you take ACTION! By doing this repeatedly,
your fear zone will become your comfort zone and you will
find yourself doing things you never imagined would be
possible for you. Welcome to living your dreams! |

Making a
Difference - Kathy Rendon, Team 453 |
|
This past six weeks has flown by. I have been very busy
assisting my mother. She suffers from COPD, emphysema
and severe osteoporosis. She was experiencing pains
through her chest and ribs. The doctors finally
discovered that she had 5 compression fractures in her
back. She was referred to a doctor who performs
kyphoplasty.
Her surgery was 2-1/2 weeks ago and she's doing much
better, however she cannot get around on her own. I have
been spending all of my time assisting her with normal
day-to-day duties. I take her to appointments, do her
grocery shopping, and stay with her on garbage night.
While I have not yet had the opportunity to assist in
my community, I do believe that I am giving back by
helping my mom. It makes me feel so good that I am able
to be there for her as she was for me during my first 20
years of life.
My Empower-U experience came at exactly the right
time. You see my mom is not the most positive person and
I draw my strength from the training. I do my best to
impart positive thinking methods to her. She does listen
and, at times, practices what I preach! I am committed
to helping her as much as I can and to tell her every
day just how much her love has meant to me. |

Word Play |
|
Today's word is "estranged," which means experiencing bad feeling or
alienation where there had originally been love, affection, or
friendliness. You can see it used in the sentence from today's
Action Steps: "Whether it is starting a side business for extra
income, reaching out to a friend or family member with whom you've
become estranged, or changing an old belief about yourself, there is
something that is pending for you." |

"The Butterfly Effect" by Jim
Meurer |
|
Somewhere in the
world a butterfly spreads it’s wings and takes flight. In
another part of the world a gust of wind at a critical
moment pushes an athlete across the finish line, breaking
the old record by 1/1000 of a second.
Have you ever heard
of the butterfly effect? Something along these lines: that
an independent random event can cause an effect on an
entirely unrelated event. Another way it is described is
“the propensity of a system to be sensitive to initial
conditions”. The concept was first proposed by Edward
Lorenz, and has become a big part of the way that weather is
predicted. It has also become a topic of debate about the
randomness of cause and effect in the natural world.
“A new
conception was being made… that whatever fundamental
units the world is put together from, they are more
delicate, more fugitive, more startling than we catch in
the butterfly net of our senses”
Jacob Bronowski “The Ascent of Man”
Well, I’m no
weatherman, nor do I spend a lot of time in theoretical
discussions about, or the philosophy of, cause and effect. I
do, however, truly believe that there is an immense power in
how our actions influence events that seemingly have nothing
to do with that action. In fact, I believe it is so
frequent, so consistent, that it virtually shapes the way
society functions.
I also believe
this is a large part of what is revealed to us in Awakening.
The heightened sensory acuity, the ability to look at
ourselves honestly… to confront who we are and what we want.
To become aware of just how unaware we are… up until now.
This is when we begin to understand just how large an impact
our presence here on this planet really has. And everything
that comes with that understanding… our own cause and effect
if you will.
A short story:
Two women, old friends, happen to run into each other in the
market. They spend a little time getting caught up… how
things are going in their respective lives, what the kids
are doing… typical day-to-day stuff. One of the women shares
that her youngest son had recently had a remarkable
experience. It seems that Tom had a job that he loved, he
had just purchased a small condominium, and life, which had
been difficult, was finally going well for him. But there
was this problem. Tom worked in a construction company as an
apprentice, and he was failing his final exam in apprentice
school and might lose his job.
She then told what happened next: the company Tom worked for
brought him into the office, along with another senior
apprentice who had already passed the same exam, and paid
both their wages while the more experienced young man
tutored and coached Tom through the material. Tom went on to
pass his final with flying colors and advance to the next
level of the apprenticeship program. As Tom’s mother was
sharing this story, she remarked how rare it is in today’s
world that a business will reach out in that way, and how
appreciative she felt to those who made a difference in
Tom’s life.
Eventually the two women parted ways. The other woman, the
friend of Tom’s mother sat down later that evening and wrote
a letter to her own son. In the letter, she told her son how
proud she was of him, and how grateful she was that he owned
a company who’s culture was such that they would do
something like that for Tom. Her son, in turn, passed along
his appreciation to his employees who chose to make a
difference.
And that is how
it happened. I know this because, you see… Tom is on my
team, and works for the same company as I do. The same
company whose owner received the letter from his mother… the
same company whose leadership not only sent me to Awakening
November 12th, 2004, but has also sent more than two-dozen
after me.
I am grateful for
a lot of things; not least of which is working in a company
where so many have experienced Awakening. I am also becoming
more aware each day how my actions influence the world
around me… what I put in motion, what the ramifications are
of my actions and decisions.
So I ask you
this: Consider, as you go through each day, what type of
footprints you leave behind on the world… the power of your
own Butterfly Effect! |
