Today's Message |
Get Happy...
Most people complain when they don't
experience happiness, but very few do anything about it.
Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
Maxwell Maltz, physician and author of the classic
self-help book, "Psycho-Cybernetics,"
described the human mind as a goal-seeking organ. Day in and
day out our minds are searching, exploring and working to
understand the world.
He also emphasized that all of our daily actions are a
direct result of our habits. By clearly visualizing
something, we trigger a creative mechanism in our mind that
automatically moves us towards what we visualize. This
happens whether we are aware of it or not.
Why This Is Important...
Because we tend to think in habitual ways, most people's
thoughts run at cross-purposes with one another. For
example, someone might think about opening a new business,
but at the same time have a habitual thought they learned
while growing up that business people are greedy and selfish
and therefore bad. These conflicting thoughts will interfere
with taking action at the beginning of the project, and
often contribute to self-sabotaging it when it's about
to bear fruit.
This is one reason why it's so important to become very
aware of the automatic self-talk we do with ourselves
throughout the day. Some of these automatic thoughts are
actually interfering with reaching our goals and dreams.
If you've ever spent time paying attention to them, you
know that these automatic thoughts are very fluid and seem
almost natural. At a deep level we treat them as though they
were some kind of absolute truth. Examples of these include
statements like, "Life is hard," and "I'm not smart enough."
The good news is that we are always learning and we can
reprogram these old beliefs and thoughts - but not until
we've identified them and brought them out into the light of
day. Once this is done we have the chance to change the
thought, make a new habit and take action on it.
What does this have to do with happiness?
Happiness is a Choice
By clearly choosing to be happy, by developing an organic
and ever-refining image of ourselves being happy and by
taking the actions that lead us to be truly happy within
ourselves, we gradually change old, unhappiness-creating
thoughts into powerful triggers for more and more happiness.
Needless to say, events in the world around us aren't
always conducive to helping us create happiness. Even so, we
always have the choice of shifting ourselves into the
moment and reconnecting with our power and choose to be
happy.
How? By remembering the 'orange ball' in our belly, by
creating the habit of choosing only powerful words, by
reinforcing our gratitude for the things we do have
and by spending time actually doing those things that make
us happy. Once we create the crystal-clear image of
ourselves being, feeling and acting happy, all that's left
is to keep this image in front of our consciousness at every
moment.
Here is a quote from Dr. Maltz that explains this as well
as I've ever seen:
“Stand up to crises. Don't let them throw you! Fight to
stay calm... even surmount the crisis completely and turn it
into an opportunity. Refuse to renounce your self-image. No
matter what happens, you must keep your good opinion of
yourself. No matter what happens, you must hold your past
successes in your imagination, ready for showing in the
motion picture screen of your mind. No matter what happens,
no matter what you lose, no matter what failures you must
endure, you must keep faith in yourself. Then you can stand
up to crises, with calm and courage, refusing to buckle;
then you will not fall through the floor. You will be able
to support yourself.”

Action Steps for Today |
|
Follow these steps to increase your level of happiness. Start
today! 1. Determine what you will experience when you are
truly happy. Imagine the look on your face, the feeling in
your body and the way your voice will sound. Spend time on
this until it's exactly the way you want it in detail.
2. See this as happening right now in this very
moment. No matter what other thoughts, tasks and
distractions you think you have around you, focus solely on
embodying this feeling. Imagine you are looking into a
mirror right now and seeing yourself this happy.
3. Since you want happiness to become a habit (remember,
habits lead to action), write down your description of
yourself as being happy right now. Carry it with you every
where and periodically look at it to remind yourself of this
intention.
4. Take action. Do things every day that make you happy.
Reinforce through your actions the feelings, ideas and
vision of yourself being happy.
Really do this! If you do, you may be quite surprised at
how the world around you responds... |

The Tea Cup |
There was a couple who used to go England to shop in a
beautiful antique store. This trip was to celebrate
their 25th wedding anniversary. They both liked antiques
and pottery, and especially tea-cups. Spotting an
exceptional cup, they asked "May we see that? We've
never seen a cup quite so beautiful."
As the lady handed it to them,; suddenly the tea-cup
spoke, "You don't understand." It said, "I have not
always been a tea-cup. There was a time when I was just
a lump of red clay. My master took me and rolled me
pounded and patted me over and over and I yelled out,
'Don't do that. I don't like it! Let me alone,' but he
only smiled, and gently said; 'Not yet!!'
"Then. WHAM! I was placed on a spinning wheel and
suddenly I was spun around and around and around. 'Stop
it ! I'm getting so dizzy! I'm going to be sick!', I
screamed. But the master only nodded and said, quietly;
'Not yet.' He spun me and poked and prodded and bent me
out of shape to suit himself and then......
Then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I
yelled and knocked and pounded at the door. 'Help! Get
me out of here!' I could see him through the opening and
I could read his lips as he shook his head from side to
side, 'Not yet'.
"When I thought I couldn't bear it another minute, the
door opened. He carefully took me out and put me on the
shelf, and I began to cool. Oh, that felt so good! 'Ah,
this is much better,' I thought.
But, after I cooled he picked me up and he brushed and
painted me all over. The fumes were horrible. I thought
I would gag. 'Oh, please; Stop it, Stop it!!' I cried.
He only shook his head and said. 'Not yet!'.
Then suddenly he put me back in to the oven. Only it was
not like the first one. This was twice as hot and I just
knew I would suffocate. I begged. I pleaded. I screamed.
I cried. I was convinced I would never make it. I was
ready to give up. Just then the door opened and he took
me out and again placed me on the shelf, where I cooled
and waited ------- and waited, wondering What's he going
to do to me next?
An hour later he handed me a mirror and said 'Look at at
yourself.' And I did.
I said, 'That's not me; that couldn't be me. It's
beautiful. I'm beautiful!'
Quietly he spoke: "I want you to remember, then,' he
said, 'I know it hurt to be rolled and pounded and
patted, but had I just left you alone, you'd have dried
up.
I know it made you dizzy to spin around on the wheel,
but if I had stopped, you would have crumbled.
I know it hurt and it was hot and disagreeable in the
oven, but if I hadn't put you there, you would have
cracked.
I know the fumes were bad when I brushed and painted you
all over, but if I hadn't done that, you never would
have hardened. You would not have had any color in your
life. If I hadn't put you back in that second oven, you
wouldn't have survived for long because the hardness
would not have held.
Now you are a finished product. Now you are what I had
in mind when I first began with you.'"
The moral of this story is this:
God knows what He's doing [for each of us]. He is the
potter, and we are His clay. He will mould us and make
us, and expose us to just enough pressures of just the
right kinds that we may be made into a flawless piece of
work to fulfill His good, pleasing and perfect will.
So when life seems hard, and you are being pounded and
patted and pushed almost beyond endurance; when your
world seems to be spinning out of control; when you feel
like you are in a fiery furnace of trials; when life
seems to "stink", do this.... Brew a cup of your
favorite tea in your prettiest tea cup, sit down and
think on this story and then, have a little talk with
the Potter.

Word Play |
|
Today's word is "sabotage," which means to undermine,
destroy or damage something. It also refers to doing something in a
slipshod or clumsy way. You can see it used in the sentence from today's
Action Steps: "These conflicting thoughts will interfere with
taking action at the beginning of the project, and often contribute
to our self-sabotaging it when it's about to bear fruit." |

A Quote About Choosing Your
Attitude |
|
Here's my
favorite quote from the book I read for my office management
project... it's about "choosing your attitude" -
incidentally, the book is called "Fish!" and it's written by
Stephen C. Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen.
"When you are doing what you are doing, who are you being?
Are you being impatient and bored, or are you being world
famous? You are going to act differently if you are being
world famous."
