Choosing Your Attitude...
Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
Have you ever noticed how different people sometimes respond
differently to the
same event? I was really struck by this a couple of weeks
ago when I went to a local conference. There were speakers
and hands-on demonstrations as well as booths offering various
items and services.
As part of the day, I had the opportunity to talk with
lots of people attending the conference. I noticed that each
of them had a different response to the experience. Some
people loved it, some were disappointed and some were
neutral about it. Yet all of them attended the same event.
As I started noticing this I wanted to see if I could
identify the differences in people and their reactions. Here
are the variables that stood out in my informal exploration:
- Expectation The most obvious difference
between those who loved the conference and those that
didn't was the expectation they arrived with. One
gentleman, who expressed disappointment, said that he
hadn't seen anything new at the conference. He had come
expecting to find something he'd never seen before. A woman I spoke with,
who loved the experience, had also previously seen all
of the exhibits and services being offered. Unlike the
first gentleman, she used the
experience to remind her of things she wanted to apply
to her own work, and also of places she could refer
people who needed certain types of services. She expected
to find some value at the conference, and did.
- Mindset Those who grumbled about their
experience also seemed to be generally pessimistic about
other parts of their life. To use the old Zen saying,
they were always looking at the half of the glass that
was empty. Those who found things interesting tended to
be more
optimisticthey paid more attention to the half of
the glass that was full.
- Posture — One other interesting thing emerged
while I spoke with people: it was possible much
of the time to guess what a person's response to the
conference would be. How? By simply observing the
non-verbal clues of body posture, facial expression and
tone of voice. Those who didn't like the conference were
contracted in the middle of their torsos, had no smile
and spoke in a way that lacked energy. People who liked
it had a neutral to happy look on their face, were standing straighter
and had much more energy in their voice.
Now obviously this little informal 'research' project
isn't a definitive exploration of this phenomenon, however
it was illustrative of the point: our attitudes strongly
influence the quality of our experience in the world.
It made me re-examine my own attitudes, expectations and
mindset about a variety of things. Like most of us, I've got
places where I can improve my attitude. I've started looking
more closely at this in relation to my daily life.
The upcoming EQ: Communicating with Power course will
give you the tools to communicate much more effectively with
yourself and with others, including ways you can improve
your ability to choose your attitude.
See today's action steps for more about how you
can change your attitude to help improve your experience of the world. |
|
Action Steps for Today |
|
You can
create a shift in your attitude by paying attention to how
you think about things, particularly in the first few
minutes of your day.
Compare the following two
examples of waking up and saying to yourself:
"I'll drag
myself out of bed and rush to get ready so I can go to
work."
Or,
"It's a
great day to be alive! I wonder what interesting and
exciting things are in store for me today."
By setting
your attitude with your first thoughts of the day, you
determine exactly how you will approach everything that
happens. This is one of the basic ideas of the 5 & 5
exercise, particularly the part of stating what you are
grateful for. It helps you adjust your attitude for the day. |

Making a
Difference - Kurt Ver Helst, Team 455 |
|
I just began participating in a small group made up of
college men from our campus ministry. We have met so far
four times. We have a set number of questions that we go
over and discuss. Each session lasts about an hour. My
primary contribution to this group is to give my life
experience, share what God has done for me personally
and help them with critical choices in their current
life; Act as a mentor.
I am really psyched so far because this is a great
group of guys. Two are freshmen and two are seniors. The
one senior is engaged.
I am feeling really good about this because I know
how much my influence can help shape them.
Some of the questions that we discuss deal with
issues that pertain to there current age. I have been
able to give them wisdom from my victories and
failures/lessons learned. They have all been very
thankful and appreciative.
The benefits that I have gained from giving of myself
in this experience are numerous:
- Feeling of worth. They look intently when I
speak.
- Increase in desire to study God’s word so that I
can be prepared for these men when they ask the
tough questions.
- I am happier knowing that all the ups and downs
of my life have some weird purpose that can helps
others to not make some of the mistakes that I did,
and avoid some of those consequences.
- My enthusiasm even just since Leadership
Awakening has allowed me to communicate with more
passion and purpose.

Word Play |
|
Today's word is "phenomenon" which means an observable fact or
event or an item of experience or reality. You can see it used in
this sentence from today's main article: "Now obviously this little informal 'research' project
isn't a definitive exploration of this phenomenon, however
it was illustrative of the point: our attitudes strongly
influence the quality of our experience in the world. |

"Focus" by Sheri Pulis |

It's a great day to be alive!!! How many of you woke up
this morning and the first thought was - "I have to go to
work" "I have a meeting I have to go to", etc, etc, etc.
Each day that we have is a gift, given to make a difference
in the lives of those around us as well as to keep living
life like it matters. There are people out there, who's Dash
Of Life has just ended. Make the most of your dash, if you
have not been living your life like it matters, THE TIME IS
NOW!!!! When was the last time you read your mission
statement? Does it still touch your heart, body and soul? If
not, them the time is now to revisit and redo!
What have you been focusing on? You and I must take
action that focuses on changing our situations. Let alone,
our minds tend to go toward the negative. We must focus on
where and how to respond, or else we will drift toward
unproductive attitudes and results.
FOCUS: It's what leaders do! |
