Today's Message

The Power of Commitment Revisited

In our January 14, 2005 issue of "Let the Journey Continue" we offered an article called, "The Power of Commitment." Today, we offer you a different perspective on this important part of life. We start with a quote by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe from the original article, a quote that bears repeating:

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. 

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now."

This is powerful stuff. And beginning with total commitment is a very powerful way to move things in your direction.

However, as many people have shared, no matter how powerfully you begin the commitment process, it is only by constant renewal, refinement and re-commitment that you will ultimately reach your goals.

Perhaps you've found yourself in a situation like this: you've begun a project or even implementing your mission statement from Leadership Awakening with the best of intentions. You've felt the commitment and seen the vision of the end result. You may have put months or even years of heart, body and soul into the process, but found that you haven't reached your goal yet.

At times like these, it's all too easy to become discouraged and loose hope. It's all too easy to give up the original commitment that began the process.

Of course, your priorities might have changed in the meanwhile, which would affect how you see it. But if you take a moment, re-examine your original intention and find it still worthy of your energy, then this is the time to take extraordinary measures to re-commit yourself to achieving your dreams.

See the "Action Steps for Today" for some specific ideas about how you can strengthen your commitment to those things that are truly important to you. 

I also recommend that you read or re-read chapter 6 of Becoming Your Dreams: Want It. Create It. Live It! That's the chapter on commitment... Good stuff!

 

Action Steps for Today

How do you reconnect with the power of your commitments? What tools do you have to draw upon to keep this important aspect of your life active and a living part of your actions and decisions every day?

Here are just a few suggestions:

First of all, you need to be able to focus, or re-focus, on what you are committed about, on what drives you in your quest. Review your Mission Statement, look at your 5 & 5 list, remember what is really important in your life. And do it every day! This keeps it fresh and foremost in your mind and helps you make decisions about the smaller details of your daily activities - decisions that will ultimately move you in the direction of fulfilling those bigger commitments.

Second, make sure your list of priorities is up-to-date with your current focus and vision. A Mission Statement is organic and grows as we do. If you haven't updated it recently this would be a great time to look it over and at least fine-tune it.

Third, every day when you do your 5 & 5 list, think about how you will take action today to support, reinforce and move closer to fulfilling at least one of your most important commitments. Over time this will keep your passion for reaching your goals stronger and hugely strengthen your ability to honor those commitments.

Making a Difference - Matt Abdallah, Team 349

I met with one of my closest friends today. No later than two minutes upon entering his house he mentioned that I looked different. We began to talk and without specifics I related the things that I had experienced during those few days.

The emotion and passion must have been emanating from me because with tears in his eyes my friend then said, " I need to go on a retreat like that".

I really can't express the feeling that ran through me after experiencing this. I do know however that it is the reason why I wrote what I did for my mission statement. My roommate (also an Empower U grad) and I are in the planning stage as I type to sponsor my friend for the awakening course. Thank you for all of the support team 349 and thank you Mr. Bickler for helping me to open my eyes for the first time.
