Making a
Difference - David Ray, Team 467 |
|
As I contemplated the activity I would do to give back, I
realized my mission and results from Leadership
Awakening were to give back. But I realized in
Leadership Awakening that I was giving, just not to the
right people – my wife and my
children. What I wasn't giving to them was me and my
time, up until now.
Therefore I thought about giving back and realized that
I give significantly to my community with community
service groups - Kiwanis, Boys and Girls Clubs or Ada
County Board Member and Methodist Church financial
committee. It might be safe to say that with my work and
my community service that I performed on a regular basis
is what has left that void in my life, which is time
spent with those who mean the most to me, my family.
Therefore I decided to "get out
of my comfort zone" when it came to my children and give
more of my valuable time to them. I chose to take my
four year old son, Lance, to work with me. Now keep in
mind that this is a busy physical therapy practice;
phone calls for me, patients needing my time for 30
minutes at a time with no interruptions and a four year
old who needs to eat, play and have Dad's attention was
always a concern of mine. I have always been concerned
with not imposing on someone else's time and to not
inconvenience anyone, especially my patients.
This was one of the best days of
my life. To see the look on my son's face when he said,
"Daddy, can I go to work with you?" and to be told
"Yeah, you bet!" instead of, "No, Daddy's too busy," was
a moment I will never forget. In addition, the look on
Jill's face when she realized I had said yes to Lance
instead of no again.
I know now that he feels that no
matter how busy I am that he is still my priority. I was
able to give to him, even though I was busy, and he
could be a part of what takes his Daddy away from him so
much.
I struggled with whether this
would fulfill the assignment requirements, as the
request was to choose one new thing that I can give of
myself to others and not be something that I am
currently doing. However, when I though longer about it,
that is exactly what I needed to do as my assignment
because I was not giving to my children the time they
need from me. I know it had a tremendous impact on
Lance, as he his still talking about going to work with
Daddy.
I have felt so much more at a
balance with my work and my time with family that it has
benefited me to feel that my children know that I love
them a opposed to just telling them that I love them.
All my children have told me, since Leadership
Awakening, that they love me and the beauty of it all is
that they say it out of the blue and with such emphasis
and compassion that I realize that things like taking
them to work and spending more time with them has truly
made us a closer family. After all, leadership is about
personal growth.
I realized that what I gave to
my son, simply my time, came back to me in a form of
love and connection that has made us much closer and
helped him communicate with me instead of becoming
frustrated or withdrawing. Great moments. |
