Do What You Love or Love What You Do?
By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger
Just out of high school I got what I thought was a perfect job. I was a school
bus driver in the suburbs of L.A. It was perfect for me at that time because I could
support myself while also having lots of free time during the day, on
weekends and on holidays. I used this extra time to study, learn and
practice the things that were most interesting to me, namely the Oriental
healing arts.
After a number of years of study I had the opportunity to teach and practice
my healing work at a local martial arts studio. I jumped at the chance but
was also nervous about leaving the steady income I received from the bus
driving job. As a compromise I kept the driving job and used the extra time
it offered me to teach classes and develop a practice seeing clients. I also kept
detailed records of the income from both sources.
A few months into this process it was clear to me that I not only made 3-4
times more money with the healing work, but I also really loved doing it.
Still, I was nervous about giving up my regular paycheck. As a result of
this conflict I stopped enjoying driving the bus. Every day became drudgery
for me to get up early and hit L.A. traffic to pick up the kids.
In the following few months I discovered something that has served me well ever since. I discovered that my attitude about driving the
school bus (or doing anything else) made all the difference in how much I
enjoyed it. When I spent my time worrying about giving up the paycheck and
wishing I could spend more time doing what I loved, the driving was an awful
burden. This went on for several months.
Then, with about 3 months left in the school year I made a shift. I decided that I
would finish out the school year, then take the summer off and just do healing work. I was determined to make a decision about returning to driving
a month or so into summer. I also decided that since I might only have a few
more months of driving the school bus, I'd better enjoy it while I could.
The decision to enjoy driving again changed everything. All of a sudden I
started looking forward to greeting the kids every day. I spent time talking
with them when they got on the bus at the end of the day. 'Problem kids' stopped being problems and
life was much, much easier. Interestingly, even the healing work I was doing
got better.
After that summer I never went back to school bus driving. But the lesson of
choosing to love what I was doing stayed with me and led to many more
opportunities to do what I love ever since. |

Action Plan for Today |
|
Whether you work in your own business or are employed working for someone else,
it's crucial to learn how to enjoy your work. Even if you have other plans
in the medium or long term, there is nothing that takes the place of
deciding to enjoy whatever you are doing right now. |

Making a
Difference - Troy Nesbit, Team 464 |
|
It is hard for me to describe the overall experience that
I have received having gone through the Leadership
Awakening training. It was definitely a great experience
and one that I will never forget. The greatest benefit
for me has come in the way of affirming my faith and
commitment to the local church. It was a bit alarming to
me that so few people in my class have the level of
relationships outside of class that they had in the
class. Many in the class expressed that they felt closer
to the team in 48 hrs. than they did to any other group
in there lives. That was eye opening to me! I enjoyed
the group, but I have many relationships that go far
beyond what was experienced in those two days. How
horrible life is for so many people.
Everyone wants to be accepted and loved. Everyone
wants to overcome their insecurities and be all they
were meant to be. Everyone is searching for answers to
life's difficult problems. I believe those answers are
found in a restored relationship with God through Jesus
Christ and a vital inclusion in His community; the local
church. The kinds of things done in the course are the
kinds of things that should happen regularly in the
local church. I was inspired to do a better job at
leading my church family.
I loved it that everyone was challenged! There's
still more there. I was really uncomfortable that
beliefs were not challenged. I am not talking
specifically about faith issues. I am talking about life
decisions. One member of our team abandoned his family
and moved to a different part of the country. He did it
because he thinks it will be the best for his kids.
Shouldn't he have been challenged on that instead of
affirmed? Every statistic would disagree with his
conclusion. Another woman came in super insecure but
extremely lovely and likeable. The approach seemed to
push her to become someone she was not and actually made
her less likeable by the end to the time. I would have
loved to see her abandon her insecurity, but not have to
become so unnaturally forceful. I am sure that won't
last for her.
I am more committed than ever to be the man God has
called me to be. Empower U served as a tool to challenge
my leadership and press me in areas that I had grown
content with. I have been described as an extremely
intense and passionate individual. Many would think that
I would be the last one to need a fire lit under his
butt, but that is exactly what has happened. There
really is so much more there!
Thanks for the experience. I pray God will give you
wisdom as you continue to improve the process. |
