"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do
than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Today's Message

Serious Business

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger

Virtually every graduate of Empower U's Leadership Awakening leaves the training fired up and ready to take on the world. They have re-connected to their own core values and the powerful emotions that these values elicit. They know what they want and where they're going.

Even so it's not always easy to keep this momentum. Those who take this energy and use the tools – writing in their journals, doing their 5 and 5 every morning, connecting with their classmates on the forum, etc. – find it easier to keep their reclaimed passion for life strong. Those who don't reinforce what they've learned find it more difficult.

Why is it so difficult to keep the passion strong?

One very important reason is because the world around us isn't usually set up to encourage us to succeed. We get flack from family members, discouragement from friends and co-workers and negative messages from the media. All of this reminds me of an old Bob Dylan lyric in a song called "It's Alright Ma" that speaks about someone who:

Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

It seems like it's always easier for people who won't make the effort to improve their lives to instead pick on those who do. Crabs galore.

But, since it's your life we're talking about, there isn't (or shouldn't be) anything that is more directly relevant to you. After all, if you aren't living you mission, how are you going to truly make a difference in the world?

This means that it's serious business for you to be sure that you are staying on track, keeping your vision and focus strong and pursuing your life mission with passion.

That's why we continually encourage you to use your Empower U tools. And, we always look for ways to give you more tools to help you reach your goals and achieve more every day. Please take this as a gentle reminder to do those things that will help keep you on track... Recommit today and don't let anything dissuade you from becoming your dreams.

You Can Make a Difference

If you've been reading "Let the Journey Continue" for any time, you've probably noticed that we periodically mention Fr. Israel Gonsalves. He's the member of the Carmelite Friars who runs an orphanage in Mbeya, Tanzania.

As you might imagine, the orphans always need supplies. In particular, they need school supplies for the coming school year.

Empower U will soon be sending another shipment to Father Israel and the orphans in Africa. We will be collecting school supplies. Donations from graduates would be greatly appreciated and very welcomed by Fr. Gonsalves and the orphans.

If you want to make a difference in the lives of these children, please send donations of school supplies or money to be used for supplies to our Texas office. We can also accept credit card donations. All money collected will go directly to purchasing supplies for the orphans. Here is the address:

Making a Difference: Sheri Pulis, Team 405

In order for us as humans to continue to live life like it matters, we must choose to live it! In doing that, we get to make it a part of our everyday life. Every second, minute, hour we must live it!

For myself I am doing this several different ways. The first, is through my involvement in Toastmasters, a non-profit organization that helps individuals improve their communication and leadership skills. There are currently over 200,000 members worldwide. As of July 1, I am District Governor for District 39, which has over 5,000 members.

Each District Governor gets to choose a theme, mine for the 2006-2007 term is "Making A Difference... One Toastmaster at a Time." I developed this not only from the Starfish story, but also from the story about the General who wanted to change the world. This General came to the realization that he needed to change himself, and this would change his family, changing his town, changing his country, therefore changing the world.

The other way that I am living it, is through Toastmasters I have the opportunity to mentor young people through Kaiser's Summer Youth Employment Program. For 8 weeks, from 11-12 on Wednesdays, I get to teach them Communication and Leadership skills. I instill in them the EmpowerU principles of being focused and committed, having passion for what they do, being part of a team, seeing their vision, and knowing their purpose.

We had a graduation on Friday August 11, which I was the keynote speaker. I began with the story of the General, letting them know that they can change the world, starting with themselves!

I presented each young person with a custom made bookmark designed by an EmpowerU Graduate, Niki Wehling. The top of the bookmark is their name, underneath their name it says "Today I will make a difference", followed by the starfish story. At the bottom is a nice graphic of a starfish! I want them to know that they will make a difference as they continue to make better choices.

We have so much influence over those around us and helping them live life like it matters. People are always watching us, so make sure that you are living life like it matters. Our actions will give others permission.
