Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off...
One of the underlying reasons why you are reading this article, or going
to Leadership Awakening, Leadership Adventure… why you go to graduations,
counseling or even school is that you (and me too!) want to be successful. Success is a word that means different things to different people. I
believe each of us should define success for ourselves; otherwise how do you
know if you are on the right track… or when you have arrived?
Today I want to talk about something that success is NOT. Success is not
perfection; success is not “never making a mistake.” I believe that if you
are playing big in life then you will take some chances… and thus make some
mistakes. The added problem is that if you are playing big and you make a
mistake… it could be a “bigger” mistake.
What To Do When It's “Too Hard” To Go On
Too many people create the belief system that if it is too hard, if obstacles
pop up, or if they get knocked down then it must not be “meant to happen.” If
that belief system were true then the Israelites would have turned around and
gone back to Egypt. That little 2 week journey into the wilderness took them 40
years!
If people always adopted the attitude that things weren't “meant to happen” you
would never have heard of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Nelson Mandela, Rosa
Parks, Mary Kay, Colonel Sanders of KFC Chicken, etc. (For an outstanding

Action Plan for Today - Picking Up a New Habit |

Scott's article in this issue goes to the heart of an experience
we all have, namely running into obstacles along the path to
reaching our dreams. And, because this is such a common
experience, we need to have the tools to deal with it as quickly
and efficiently as possible. Here's one way to make this
response a habit:
- Notice how you have felt in the past when you get
'knocked down.' Do you get angry, frustrated, depressed,
sad, closed down? Notice what you tend to say to yourself at
those moments. Typically these thoughts will go in the
direction of, "I never get a break," or "Why does this
always happen to me," or something similar.
- Decide right now what you will do the next time you
experience these thoughts or feelings. Come up with a
specific thought that you like much better than the
old one you're used to. The best way to come up with this is
to think about your ultimate goal, your ultimate dream. Get
laser focused on that goal and how it makes you feel.
- Spend ONLY 5 minutes a day for the next 30 days
imagining yourself facing an obstacle and responding with
the new thoughts and feelings. These thoughts and feelings
may evolve over this time as you rehearse them in your mind.
The next time you face such an obstacle call on the new
thoughts and feelings to help pick yourself up, dust yourself
off and hit it again. You'll find that it's easier than it's
ever been! |
