What's That Smell?

By Scott V. Black

On the first night in Leadership Awakening as we are wrapping up the first module we ask this question, “How do we experience this process called life?” It is an interesting question from a “thinkers” perspective. How do we know we are living? How do we know if Mr. Black is a good looking guy? How do we know if someone is hygienic? How do we know if someone is a good orator? How do we process this experience called life?

We experience life through our “receptors.” We process this experience called life auditorilly, kinesthetically, visually, olfactory and gustatorilly. In other words, we process life through our senses. We hear, feel, see, smell and taste our way through this journey, through this process we call life. In the communication psychology of Neuro Linguistic Programming we learn how to use this information in relation to change work and to maximize our functioning in “this” experience we call human.

Diane Ackerman wrote an outstanding book called the Natural History of the Senses. If you want to know more about your senses I recommend that you read it.

The Nose Knows...

However today I want to touch on one of the most underrated of the senses, the olfactory sense. The sense of smell is a powerful mechanism. It is probably the most primitive, and instinctual of the senses. We process a lot more through our sense of smell, than we realize. It has a direct link to our emotional center, the limbic system. The olfactory sense has a deep and primitive effect on us at an unconscious level...

My Mission Statement: John Breidenbach, Team 486

========================================================
We're excited to offer you the opportunity to hold yourself even more accountable. One way to do this is by sharing your personal mission statement with your fellow graduates. Today begins a new regular feature for "Let the Journey Continue" in which you can read—and be inspired by—mission statements of your fellow Empower U Graduates.
========================================================

The die has been cast. The decision has been made. I have stepped over the line. I won't look back, let up slow down back away or be still.

My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is in God's hands. I am finished and done with low living, sight walking small planning, the bare minimum, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, frivolous living, selfish giving, and dwarfed goals.

I will accomplish this mission by giving my time and talents and resources on a frequent basis. I will first to seek to understand before I am understood. I will be a nurturing, son brother, husband and father. I will be Godly inspired, relationship seeking, inspiring, imaginative, dreamer, people leading, decision making, goal setting, risk taking, courageous, contagious, planning, always committed, always learning never quitting, attitude choosing, passionate, nurturing emotionally present, purpose driven, all giving for my wife family, friends, co-workers and especially my enemies.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, applause, or popularity. I don't have to be right, first, the best, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live by faith. I lean on Christ's presence. I love with patience, live by prayer, and labor with the power of God's grace.

My face is set. My gait is fast, my goal is heaven. My road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions are few, my Guide is reliable and my mission is clear.

I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded, or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won't give up, shut up, let up or slow up until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up and spoken up for the cause of Christ.

am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till He comes, give until I drop, speak out until all know and work until He stops me.

And when He returns for His own, He will have no difficulty recognizing me.
