Message in the Bottle

By Scott V. Black

I just had Mark Upchurch build me a very large bookcase for my office area in my bedroom. Mark is a good friend, a family member and an employee. Anybody that has been through Leadership Adventure knows Mark Upchurch. Mark is really good with wood and he builds me things for the house all the time. In my bedroom, I have this dark wood desk with a “hutch” type extension that sits on top of the desk to store needed items to do “office” type stuff. This is where I usually write my articles and do some of my creative pieces. Those that know me can assume correctly that this desk is overflowing with books, papers, magazines, pictures… shaving cream, body lotion… I need something more to get organized and clean up my work station.

I needed a book case that could allow me to move all this “stuff” off of desk and organize it all pretty and proper. As I was moving the things that this large book case was going to hold, I noticed myself all over the house getting stuff from other places as well. I was finding books and materials from my radio shows, and writings. Everything I could find for my “home office." There was stuff I found also from other desks, and areas around my house where everything has been scattered… Up Until Now!

As I was doing this I came across a “message in a bottle." And it made me consider…

Making A Difference - Wendi Spuehler, Team 485

Scott,

At the end of the Awakening class you gave us a 30 day assignment to do something "volunteer" for someone else in need. Although, I have not done exactly as the assignment stated, I am in the process of being a Care Minister at the church I attend here.

After leaving Awakening I felt a strong sense of needing to become involved in something "bigger" than myself. Something where I could help others. I also, for the past few months have been wanting to get involved with something at church. I have been removed from activities for quite some many years. The church that my husband and I have been attending since last year is quite large and I was not sure where I could get myself "plugged in". So, I asked God for assistance.

About 2 weeks ago I got a call from an old friend from high school about our upcoming reunion; during our conversation, we discovered that we go to the same church!
She told me about the ministry she is involved in church and said that "I would be perfect!" for the job. After she told me about it, I attended an information class about the ministry and I have applied.

The ministry helps others in many different ways. The Care Ministry visits nursing homes, hospices, and also helps individuals in crisis. The ministry requires a 2 year commitment, a 6 week class and continuing education classes 1-2 times a month.

So Scott, I just wanted to let you know that I took your assignment seriously, and instead of just visiting somewhere once and reporting back to you. I have just given a 2 year commitment to "volunteering to help others." I will let you know how it is going over the next 2 years. I know you will enjoy hearing the results!

My Mission Statement: Jeremy Rickles, Team 454

========================================================
We're excited to offer you the opportunity to hold yourself even more accountable. One way to do this is by sharing your personal mission statement with your fellow graduates. Today begins a new regular feature for "Let the Journey Continue" in which you can read—and be inspired by—mission statements of your fellow Empower U Graduates.
========================================================

I will be a better person to myself and those around me. I will be the best son I can be by focusing on my father’s desire to see me become a successful man. I will be that man by focusing on my passion for music and my passion to be the best leader I can be to my family, friends, and co-workers. I will be a better brother through my expression of true emotions and challenging my siblings to be the best brothers they can be to me. I will be the best uncle I can be to my nieces and nephew who watch me even when I am not aware that I am being observed.

I will grow my talents as a musician through my determination to improve my skills every time I play an instrument. I give my best musically and emotionally during each performance whether by myself or in front of a crowd. I offer my guidance to anyone willing to be a student of music.

I will take part in my community by helping wherever help is needed. I will tackle any project big or small and ask “What’s Next?”.

I will be attentive to my companion’s needs and wishes so that I may be the best future husband and father I can be. My children will grow in a loving household full of good morals to empower them to make the best decisions.

I will give 100% of my being to all that I am and all that I desire to be in my relationships with my family, my work culture, and my world.
