Comfortably Numb
By Scott V. Black
I was doing a class not too long ago. After the first half of the
final exam one student shared that one of the great benefits
was he was alive and excited about life. He realized that he had been
“Comfortably Numb.” Up Until Now. He was a good guy. Anybody who saw this guy
would believe he had a pretty good life and he is pretty lucky. Yet, despite
what others around him believed they saw, he was living a life that was
“comfortably numb.”
Many times since that class, the phrase “comfortably numb” has come into my conscious
thoughts. Over the years, I have learned that if something continues to occupy
space in my mind, then there is a lesson for me. The Holy Spirit might have some
learning for me. Comfortably numb… such an interesting phrase for a kinesthetic
person, such as me. It is a phrase that I can step into. I can put this on. I
know what “comfortable” feels like. I know what numb feels like physically,
psychologically and emotionally.
As I put it on I get a chance to experience
what he was talking about when he said, “Up Until Now I have been ‘Comfortably
Numb.’” You can too, just ask yourself this question, “what is it like to be
“comfortably numb?” How would I respond to things, being “comfortably numb?”
Good things, bad things… what would my action be, or reaction, if I am
“comfortably numb?”
I have had talks with graduates associated with that class and we have discussed
the concept of “comfortably numb.” I decided to write about it because it
continued to stay in my mind. So I did what I always do as I go through the
process of creating these articles, I step into it and experience the pattern
first hand. As I put this on, I start to consider the question that I want our
graduates to consider when they go through our trainings...

Graduation Notes by Tammy Parriott,
Team 480 |
|
I had the privilege of attending an
Awakening graduation in Iowa recently. It was truly an
inspiration to me. This was a group of 16 graduates and the
passion in the room was overwhelming. I want to share some
of the highlights and I hope that they will inspire you as
they did me.
-
A young man (in his 20’s) gave an
inspiring speech and then stood up and hugged his father
for the first time in his life. It really touched me,
they weren’t bad people just people who didn’t share
emotions. The impact that this will have for his family
is amazing!!! For our team the message is: “Don’t leave
anybody out there who needs a hug without a hug,
especially someone you love.” (I will be going to school
and hugging some of my ‘hard to hug’ kids tomorrow)
-
Another man on the team had a great
comment he said “I learned something over the weekend: I
have a wife!” He then shared that he had been married
for five years. His wife was in the audience, he
proceeded to go over and hug her, I don’t think there
was a dry eye in the room.
-
A young girl (about 20) from the
audience stood up and challenged the team to “LIVE IT”
she shared that before her father went to Awakening she
wouldn’t have been proud to walk down the isle with him
when she got married, but ever since his class he ‘lives
it’ and she now thinks he is an awesome man! This man
was in my Awakening class and he was bursting with
pride.
Another man from the audience brought a
teenage son and shared that he loved him with such emotion,
and he also shared that he brought his son to graduation so
that the son could see the impact that this has had on his
father’s life. I know the boy would have rather been playing
ball but he will remember that moment.
These are just a few stories, I could go on
and on but I really just wanted to share with my team
because I know how inspiring it can be. My husband Mark
staffed this Awakening, this was his first time staffing
Awakening. He is worn out but recharged, if that makes any
sense. He said that Awakening was more exhausting than
Adventure, but very gratifying. I am just in awe that he is
mine!
After a morning walk I watched my dog roll in the back yard.
I hope you all spend the day just ‘rolling in life’. Take it
all in, enjoy every minute!
Have a great week!!
