Livin' In Buffalo
By Scott V. Black
Hello Empower U Leadership Team. Wheeeeeeeeew… what a ride, there is so
much to share and so little space. Most of you know that last week I was
acknowledged for being created 42 years ago, yes, it was my birthday. To all
of you who called in or emailed me; thank you so much. It is nice to be
thought of in a positive light. Those that don’t care for me, possibly don’t
like me, even they were pretty excited. The day we are born we are one day
closer to death. So they got to mark off one more year! So everybody is
happy, at least momentarily. Which is what today’s article is all about…
where are you living? Where do you want to live? Do you believe you are
living in the right place? I hate to be as trivial as to ask this question…
“Do You know what you want?” Do you want to live in Buffalo?
We had a great Leadership Experience with Team 504 in Des Moines, Iowa.
At the beginning of the week we were planning on having 12 students in the
class. By Friday, we were down to 9 by the start of class, and wound up with
8 by the end of the first night. There was an opportunity to get discouraged
by the small class size; there was an opportunity to think about the one
person that ran out the door the first night. Instead we chose to focus on
the 8 people who stayed and committed to the process. In the end, those 8
people were incredible. I believe there were 7 “real” life changes that took
place, and another person had a good experience.
This was a high on the undulating line called life. The class ended
incredibly well and we have another 8 members of the Empower U familia
living their life like it matters. We are making a difference, which allows
others to make a bigger difference. That difference allows us to get new
graduates, which allows us to make a bigger difference and that allows our
graduates to make a bigger difference… and that is living life like it
matters. A great graduation and with some help from our graduates we packed
the trailer up and Mr. Upchurch and I drove back to Texas. We arrived around
5 am and all was well.
And Then, Everything Changed...
On Monday October 8th, I woke up at 9am, less than 3 hours after closed
my eyes… after driving all night… after completing Leadership Awakening for
3 days… October 8th, was not a good day in the life of Scott Black—at least
that is how is started...

Basketball Star Jake Sullivan's
Awakening Experience
|
|
All I can say is WOW with maximum projection and
passion. The EmpowerU class has changed my life. Up
until the Awakening class I lived my life in fear.
Of course I did not know this as it had become such
a pillar in my life. My greatest fears were brought
to my attention on the weekend of October 5-7 at the
Ramada Northwest in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. Black showed me how these fears and fortified
walls that I had built up in order to deal with life
were holding me back. Who would have ever known? I
played Division 1 basketball at Iowa State was an
All Big 12 player, Academic All-American, and
following college started up a very successful
business designed to use the game of basketball to
impact young lives throughout the state of Iowa.
It appeared as though I had everything I could
ever wanted. Besides the items mentioned above I had
a beautiful family, a relationship with Christ, and
all those other things that provide the false
perception that I was living life.
After the weekend I discovered that there was no
question I was living life but I was not LIVING LIFE
AS IF IT MATTERED. My fears of failure and my
inability to open up emotionally and let people in
was keeping me from living life with Passion and
100% Commitment. In the end I was keeping my family
at a comfortable distance in order to never let them
truly know what was going on deep inside my life. I
believe that most family relationships probably work
like this, but after the Awakening class I realized
that I meant I was content with being GOOD ENOUGH.
With only one life to live on this earth why would I
want to be GOOD ENOUGH with the people and God I
love the most?
In terms of my business life my fear of failure
were like heavy chains holding me back from making
more of an impact on young lives. The Lord had
provided me a wonderful gift into the knowledge of
getting the most out of young people, but again I
was settling for good enough. There were a few young
lives I was able to jump head first into but I was
also often holding back, because I was concerned
about what would happen if this person or that
person's parents thought my methods were not usual.
Throughout the weekend I kept wondering how many
lives I missed out on because I was holding back.
However, the best part of the weekend was my fears
were only holding me back UP UNTIL THE WEEKEND!!!!!
Now I do not fear failure on my path to accomplish
the purpose of my Lord Jesus Christ and that is to
help change the world by one young soul at a time
while standing firm in my Methods and Vision.
All I can say is praise the Lord for the
opportunity to attend the October 5-7 EmpowerU
Awakening Class. It has changed my life. I will warn
everyone that it will not be easy but it will be
powerful and when your candle is lit you will never
live life the same.
God Bless to All,
Jake Sullivan

Making a Difference - Justin
Bennett, Team 500 |
I was given an awesome opportunity by God to not only
fulfill this assignment, but to also step over a line when
fear arose to the occasion.
Last Saturday my wife and I had a weekend to ourselves
(which has been a long time coming). We decided to go out to
a Chinese buffet (since we knew it was reasonably priced and
my wife loves Chinese food). After getting my first plate
there was a gentleman by himself sitting at a table next to
us. He started to converse, I conversed back. And that was
the end of that...so I thought.
Towards the end of our meal, I decided to get some ice
cream. Being a believer who is wanting to share the good
news more instead of soaking it all in for myself; I decided
that when I come back from getting my ice cream, I will give
this man my business card and we could meet some coffee
sometime (I could tell this guy felt alone).
As I was about to hand him my card, I saw a very large
bag under the table that signaled to me he was homeless. I
froze for a second and versus giving him my card, I sat down
next to my wife. At that moment, God gave me an opportunity
to step over the line for Him. I could either just sit there
until he left or I could get back up and hand him my card. I
got back up and handed him my card and said we should meet
for coffee sometime. He stated he would love to but he is
homeless. I asked if he knew Troy Jansen (Assistant Director
for a homeless shelter in town, and we are close friends).
He said he did and that he was a great man. After we talked
some more we departed.
The story is not over. One of the reasons why I strongly
hesitated was because the last time I had the urge to
befriend someone that was lonely; they needed it, however
they were too much to handle. I did not want to my family in
that position again. But I knew that would God would protect
us from any potential harm.
I did call my friend Troy after we left the restaurant. Troy
said he does remember this man. He said he is one of the
only few men that respect the rules. His wife died of
elephant man disease when she was thirty-six. Ever since his
life went down hill. Troy could relate because he had a
sister that died of the same thing at thirty-five.
This gentleman by the name of Al Stine is now in my heart
and prayers. I may see him again, I may not. I know one
thing for sure, I made his day, and that was worth enough to
step over the line. |
