Fire's Burning
By Scott V. Black
Good day Empower U Leadership Team. If you’ve seen or read any news over the
last month, then you know that San Diego has been on fire. Some people lost
their lives, many people lost their homes and so many more lost hope.
Every year
fire takes lives, property, hopes and dreams and leaves in its past- nothing
but- dust and ash. Fire is not looked at in a good light. Last year there was a
burn ban during the 4th of July celebration so we couldn’t light our fireworks.
We no longer have to worry about that. The drought in Texas is over. However,
with the massive drought in the South, there is this massive fear of fire. Dry
land and sparks or flames, do not add up to anything good.
The Other Face Of Fire
Today, I want to look at fire in a different frame. Today I want to consider the
positive uses of fire in our lives. Fires can be a good thing at times. How
about the nice fireplace in a home? It is used to warm, and to bond. The Fire of
the Campfire, or the bonfire, So many special memories around a group of people
connecting and building relationships around a large, open fire… can be
mesmerizing. Of course, fire is needed to cook our food. If there were no fire,
I would be a vegetarian! I don’t much care for raw meat. Fire is used to cook
and to also kill. What a powerful message; something that is used for good can
also be used for destruction. Remember we are looking through the “positive
frame” even in terms of destruction. Think about that… ”the fire, which produces
intense heat… then kills bacteria and germs thus sterilizing it, and making for a
healthy living!
Fire is used as a metaphor for many different things. It is used to denote
passion. Those that have been around me when I get the “fire” going, can hear,
see and feel the Passion that it generates. Fire is used as a cleansing
metaphor, after a fire watch how the land grows with the nutrients the fire has
left behind. Fire has many other meanings and metaphors that we use as a
descriptor, in our world.
One of the unique uses of Fire...

"Giving Back with Some New Bling"
A little over a year ago, my family and I were handed
some quite unpleasant news. Something that would change our
lives forever, something that brought about a whole new way
of looking at life, even more powerful than the day I left
Awakening. My Mom told me that my Step-Dad was very sick. In
fact, we thought he might have cancer, and we didn't know
how bad it was. He got really sick, then he got better. Then
he got really sick again.
I like roller coasters and all, and this was the biggest
one I'd ever been on! John was a really big man—tall and
strong and powerful. And he was suddenly thin and frail and
scared. I wasn't sure what to do with that, so I just spent
as much time as I could with him and loved him like there
really wasn't a tomorrow. In 2006, Thanksgiving and
Christmas were quite possibly the BEST holidays I've ever
been a part of, because he was still alive.
John started making "goals" for himself. To make it to
Christmas 2006, to be around for Valentine's Day 2007, to
watch the Daytona 500 (on TV) one last time which he and my
Mom normally watched from their seats in Florida every year,
to witness the birth of my beautiful nephew, Jacob, who was
born in April 2007. John set goals he knew he could
realistically reach, and by God he reached them!
In March 2007 the cancer spread and he took a turn for
the worse. I was at Adventure in Texas and wasn't sure he'd
be alive when I got back. He died Memorial Day, May 28th,
2007, holding my Mom's hand while taking his last breath.
His body is no longer here, but he is constantly around me
in everything I do. My brother, my Mom and I are the closest
we've ever been, and what we now have are wonderful funny
memories of him, because he was that kind of guy. He was one
of my best friends.
And so, in August I decided I wanted to honor him
somehow. I thought of the story that is told in Awakening at
the end of the second night, about John Walsh and his
successful show, America's Most Wanted. I have staffed a
million times, and the story NEVER fails to touch me in some
way. Of course now, it hit me smack in the face like one of
the cinder blocks I broke my board on!
It's MY turn. I will do something with MY feelings. I
will take my pain and sadness and turn it into something
wonderful. I will give back and help others in some way,
like John Walsh did for other families with missing
children. Every month I will be raising money to send to
PanCAN
(Pancreatic Cancer Action Network) so that research can
always be made in hopes to find a cure to this ugly disease.
John donated his body to science when he died in May, so I
am donating my time to make bracelets for various prices.
Everything I raise will go directly to PanCAN or to jewelry
supplies. Nothing else. Whether my donation is $10 or $200,
I will send it off at the end of each month!
If you are interested in prices or photos of examples,
please contact me!
Email is the best way, and please leave me your contact
info. Most people have been ordering bracelets that say
"HBS" on them. As long as I can fit the words on it, I'll
make it say whatever you want!
Live life like it matters! John did, and I do too!! |
