"
Did You Find Yours Under the Tree?"

By Scott V. Black

Hello Empower U Leadership Team.

I trust that you all had a wonderful Holiday season, a Merry Christmas and a safe and fun New Years Eve. This time of year—the middle of December through the 1st of January—is my favorite time of the year. I truly don’t consider Christmas a day, I think of it as a season. That 17 days that covers the “stretch” mentioned above is the most enjoyable time of the year for me. People seem to be nicer; the chill in the air, the lights, the Christmas songs, buying stuff, and the kids being so excited… what a great part of each year.

Some people don’t care for certain things about the “season” and others find that they get down, or depressed, during the holidays. I have heard that one of the highest rates of depression is this time of the year. After years of research, I am convinced that a majority of those of us who get depressed… we do it to ourselves. Depression, usually, is a product of our focus and our self talk.

These thoughts have been prevalent and I was considering what to write about for this newsletter, what message do I need to hear, what message do I want to share with the Team—I was reminded of a field trip I took with my son's school this last year.

A Lesson in Focus

This last November, I went with my son Christian's 2nd grade class to the Children’s Museum in Fort Worth. There were many cool exhibits. One showed different visual effects that gave the viewer a false picture of something by using mirrors and other means to create optical illusions. It was very interesting.

My pastor was with us because he has a daughter in my son's class. He called me over to a particular exhibit and asked me to watch the video there. The object was to figure out what was happening...

Empower U News Update

The Adventure of a Lifetime!

Are you still waiting to complete the process you started in Awakening? Haven't made the commitment to go through Leadership Adventure yet?

We could tell you stories all day long about the amazing personal breakthroughs Adventure graduates have. But instead, listen to their words about the gains they've made...

"Adventure certainly took things to a whole new level for me... I really 'got' Awakening from taking Adventure...

"I like to tell people it was Anthony Robins meets Survivor."

~ Eric Bradley, Adventure Team 136

"Until I completed Adventure I had not realized the disservice I was doing myself by not completing the process. Awakening is only a very small part of the big picture. Until completing Adventure it was as though I possessed a winning lottery ticket which I could not or would not cash. I could look at my ticket and instantly recall rush of excitement at winning my millions however I stopped short of cashing it.

"Two years after enthusiastically participating in my own Awakening I chose to take one the numerous opportunities offered to me and attended Adventure.

"Rest assured now that I’ve cashed my winning ticket my want to do a good job NOW has a where, when and for whom and my desire for building a future NOW has a plan, materials & a crew of skilled builders with a powerful and fearless leader."

~ Brandy Holmes, Adventure Team 193

"Just got back tonight from Adventure! WOW... it really does take you from 26 to 100. That is no exaggeration!

"I strongly urge you all to go. You will take all those tools from Awakening and use them like you have never used them before.

"It was a rewarding weekend. Jeff and I are doing great. Each day I am excited to come home and spend quality time with him. Take a deep breath and be glad you are ALIVE, I know I am."

~ Valerie Hoffman, Adventure Team 165

Awakening Update

A Coach for a Youth Sports Organization
Shares His Leadership Awakening Experience

As soon as I left the hotel, I started calling my family and all of my friends to let them know how much Empower U had helped me change and in what ways. I was so excited, I completely missed my I-35N exit to head back to Ames and ended up going by a sign that read "Iowa City- 66 Miles." I just laughed it off and turned back home. Needless to say, I was really excited to start my new life.

When I talked to my family about the changes that I'd made, they didn't quite understand. My mom was really confused because I started crying because I was so happy, so she just started crying with me.

I let them know that I had recommitted my life to Christ as well as them, my family. Although they didn't completely understand what went on at Awakening, they embraced it with open arms and I haven't looked back since.

Since I've been back home, I've been spending tons of time with my family. We've had fun playing games as well as having amazing conversations about life.

It was an amazing feeling when my father told me "I'm proud of you."

Merry Christmas and God Bless!

Giving Thanks and Giving Back - Jesse Diaz, Team 506

I volunteered on Thanksgiving morning to help organization in assignments and orientation on visiting isolated seniors in San Francisco for a Thanksgiving meal and visit.

It was a great experience, I have done this for the past 5 years, however, had decided to not do it this year since we planned on going to Walnut Creek for Thanksgiving vs. hosting at home. I reconsidered and chose to give back this year again.

The positivity and warmth is unexplainable as I talked with families, little kids, young adults, elders, and a variety of other people that joined for the same reason - to visit an isolated person in order to provide companionship to someone during the Thanksgiving holiday. Not only were the elders well served that day, the volunteers that joined us also received a tremendous gift on Thanksgiving morning.

I take a tremendous amount of joy and hope from participating in this event. I will continue to volunteer on Thanksgiving morning as it is rejuvenating and rewarding to see so many people with genuine smiles and joyous laughter. I will also identify another organization that I may rededicate my year-long energy and time in order to impact our community in a positive manner.
