Words That Change: "Team"By Scott V. BlackHello Empower U Leadership Team. What couple of months this last few has been. I just finished up a stretch that had me doing 9 classes in a 9 week period of time. I did 5 Leadership Awakenings, 3 Leadership Adventures, 1 EQ: Communicating w/Power, a TV show, and some other events… all in 9 weeks. What a great push that was and man did it require a team. To my Empower U team, thanks for the extra effort. It took a lot from Tracy, Tami, Edie, Dennis, Bruce and myself, to effect that many peoples lives in that span of time. I am blessed to have a good team of committed people around me. Today we are going to continue with the series we are in, “Words that Change,” and today we are going to talk about Team. The Dash of Your Life Team is one of the words, next to love, that is in the category of “most over used words in the English dictionary.” Most people have no concept what a real team is and what a real team can be. In our Leadership Trainings we create some powerful teams. At Empower U international we are creating a powerful team. We are adding new team members as the renaissance continues. Dennis Huff, the President of Empower U, is introducing two new EUI Team members, to you today in his article. We are also acknowledging the loss of one of our Empower U Leadership Team members. Frank Hallak a member of Team 489 left us last week. He was a member of our Coors family and was ready to attend Leadership Adventure in the near future. Frank died prematurely. His Coors family, his personal family, and his Empower U family are deeply saddened by the loss of this leader. Please read the tribute to Frank Hallak below from those he touched at Empower U. To Walter Apodoca and our friends at Coors please know our thoughts and prayers are with you and Frank’s family. The Dash of Your Life has been playing in my head a lot lately. Not only did we lose Frank this last week but we have also had much tragedy for some of our team members with their family teams. Russell Laird lost his mom. Peter Hanna, Jaclyn Dunn, and Justin Jenkins all lost their fathers this past couple of weeks. Please if you know any of these team members please reach out to them in their time of loss. I have never lost anybody close to me, so I can only imagine what loss they must feel. You and your families are in our thoughts and our prayers. Planes crash and people die, it is a fact of life… however, that doesn’t make it any easier when it happens to our team, to our family. For Every Front Line Person... I was watching the History channel the other day and it was talking about the supply chain and the team effort it took to fight WW2. Talk about a team, it took 18 people in the supply chain to put one infantry man into the field with a gun in World War 2. It took over 3 years to plan the supply lines that made D-Day possible. Without that team effort behind the scenes, D-Day could have never happened. It took 45,000 Tons of food and supplies, a month, to support 50,000 troops in the South Pacific during World War 2. Talk about a team… 18 people who never saw battle to support one rifleman who was in battle. That is a powerful Team! When we think about war, we think about those who fought, but there were so many others that played a part. Just like Empower U, so many others that play a part besides the Trainer, besides the President or CEO. Preparing for the Future Those who know me know that I am studying Spanish. I will master the language and soon speak fluent Spanish. I would like to be fluent in Spanish by the time I am 45 years old. Empower U needs a Spanish speaking trainer. My commitment to learn Spanish is there, I just hope I am NOT Empower U’s first Spanish speaking trainer… Why? Because we need a team of committed peoples to go to the next level. If Empower U international is by Scott Black about Scott Black, then we will never have the impact we can as a TEAM. If Empower U international is more about a team, then so much more can be accomplished, so many more lives touched. In Spanish the word for Team is “Equipo.” Phonetically it sounds like this… (a keep oh). Notice the base word is equip. So what does equip mean?
This is a fascinating way to look at team. Using the Spanish word for Team, Equipo, it tells us so much about the word. Here are some pieces of the definition of EQUIP, which is the root word of the Spanish word for TEAM:
Wow, that is what a team is for and can be used for. A team is part of the arsenal. It is something to be used to increase success and maintain vision. To do more, be more and affect more! Teamwork is a Tool of Leadership We talk in Leadership Awakening about the tools that people leave our training with to help them keep it going. One of those tools that I allude to is the team. In each class we give out a team phone list. We create a bulletin board for Teams to keep in touch. Why? Their team is one of the most powerful resources our graduates have to keep it going. These people that you shared your training with, they know your strengths and weaknesses, they know what you are capable of. They become a great tool, to fight the crabs and keep this feeling going. The best thing we can do for any graduate is to put other graduates around them. That is why the 3% club being created in Sacramento is so important. That is why it is important as a believer to go to church. So there is the synergy of having people of the same values and vision around you…it becomes fuel that feeds us! Teamwork Means Support A good friend of mine, Aaron, is going through some tough times. I have been reaching out to him and his wife as they go through some very taxing times. I have been working to reach out to him and to let him know I am here if he needs me. I will leave a few messages and not hear back from him for a while. I understand what he is going through and I understand how people can sometimes react when they feel like they are under assault. So I told him, “You are not an army of one.” I think it was Shakespeare who said, “No man is an island, a rock unto himself.” To quote Barbara Streisand, we are all just “People who need people.” Each one of us is part of the whole, a part of the continent… we are not an individual team, but a part of the body. Even Christ talked about all of us being a part of the body, that we are all interdependent. That we all have different talents and gifts that when used as part of the whole, the team, then we can truly live the lives and the missions that He put us here to do. Christ tells us that we are part of his team. When the Going Gets Tough... Many of us when things get hectic or tough, we circle the wagons. We pull back and we battle on our own! Yes, that resembles me too… so I have to remind myself that I have teams of people that want to support me and “equip” me for the battle that I am in. Why would I go into battle without the proper equipment? Why would I go into battle without my armor and weapons in place. Why would I go into a situation without being properly… provided with whatever is needed for use or for any undertaking; fit out, as a ship or army... Building a Solid Team At Empower U we believe in living in the question…and then doing something about those questions. So I have a few questions for you…
It is simple, it is easy, and it just takes you doing the right things with your fingers! The best way to get someone on your team is to let them know that you are on their team… because then there is only one team! In Glenn Parker’s “Cross Functional Teams,” he explains it this way:
How are the teams in your life going? Are they succeeding because of you…in spite of you…with you? What are you doing to make sure that your teams are successful? Do you know the teams you are on? Remember one of the big lies out there is that there is NO “I” in team. I don’t care what the world tells you… that is a lie!!! Here is why it is a lie… If there is no “I” in team, then there is no “U” in team. If there is no “U” in team, then there is NO TEAM, unless you are talking about somebody else's team! Are you the “I” in your team? If not, then how can “U” be a part of that TEAM? You Are Important I am honored to be on your team. The Empower U Leadership Team, is all of us, it is a belief system, a way of living life with a purpose. Please help us grow as a team. Help us help you by putting other graduates around you. Help us grow and expand the Empower U Leadership Team. This world needs a team of committed people to make it better for our children and our children’s children. There are other teams in your life that need similar commitments… are you willing to be an equipper of what is needed? Are you part of the Equipo? Notice in Equipo, there is an “I” and a “U”—both are needed to create a powerful Team! As I am putting in place my mission to be the Mexican Deming, I am learning Spanish. If my Mission is to affect a country of people, then I should learn their language! As I am learning the language, I am learning so much more than just translations. I am learning culture and some hidden meanings. I have also now seen how there is an “I” and a “U” in team. How about YOU and I being a part of some powerful teams!!!! Remember as Empower U international grows into this powerful cause… we need enrollment officers, we need people with full time jobs who want to become trainers, we need people referring others to us, we need your support… we need your heart, body and Soul. In the process not only will you help make this world a better place… you will also live the “Golden Reality”… that when you Live your Life like it matters… It Does! With Passion-HBS Renaissance Updateby Dennis L. Huff, President
“Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision.
The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward
organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people
to attain uncommon results.” Here at EmpowerU International we continue building our dynamic team. Over the next few months we are bringing new members to our team, including trainers, sales staff, administrative and logistics personnel and others to assist in our international expansion. Expect the extraordinary! We are proud to announce two new additions to the EmpowerU Leadership Team:
Ed Halstead owns Las Vegas Tax & Financial
He is a graduate of both Awakening and Adventure and volunteers on staff as well. In fact, when Ed flew in recently to get some book work done he also went on staff for the latest Adventure course in Muenster, TX as seen in this picture. Ed Halstead and his wonderful wife Sunny live in Las Vegas with their 5 children. Welcome aboard !
Joel brings another important professional link to the team and we expect great things as we continue our Renaissance. Joel is soon to be a Master graduate having completed Awakening, Adventure and EQ. Joel and his wife Denise live in the Minneapolis/St Paul area or Minnesota. They have two sons at home and one daughter married living nearby.
Let the journey continue… Dennis L Huff
Tribute to Empower U Graduate Frank HallakA Man Who Exemplified Living Life Like It MattersLast week, at age 45, Frank Hallack died of a stroke. He leaves behind his wife and three children. All of his friends and co-workers at Coors will miss him deeply. Many of them wrote to express their sadness at his loss and their sympathy for his family. And as an empowered graduate of the Empower U International Team, we will miss him as well. Here is a poem written by one of Frank's team members:
3% Club Update and Personal InvitationOn May 7th 15 committed individuals attended the first ever meeting of the 3% Club in Sacramento. Those who came agreed that it was a powerful experience. As one of the 'perks' club members asked for, and received, an exclusive area on the Empower U forums where they can exchange information and support one another. The Club is open to graduates of all Empower U classes and meets monthly. Here is a personal message from the 15 attendees of the first 3% club inviting you to attend the next meeting:

Empower U International is Looking for Committed People to Join the RenaissanceMake an Even Bigger DifferenceIf you'd like to make a powerful difference in the world, we may have the opportunity for you. We're looking for people to fill two positions:
If you're ready to step over the line and join the Empower U International Renaissance, call the Dallas office at (817) 478-1858. My Word CoachCan you figure it out?We commonly use words and phrases that have old meanings. Often we aren't even aware of where those words came from. Twice a month we'll be giving you a hint about word and a phrase and ask you to guess what the word or phrase is. Of course we'll be giving you the answers, but do yourself a favor and see if you can get the answer before clicking on the link. Have fun! Question #1: Gordon Sumner got his stage name while he was a member of the Phoenix Jazzmen. They gave him this nickname because of the yellow-and-black striped shirt he wore on stage that made him look like a bee. Question #2: This phrase comes from a practice of foxhunters. They would drag a particular type of dried, salted and smoked fish across the foxes trail to mask its scent and make the hunt more challenging. Hint: the phrase comes from the color of the fish. See the answers by clicking here.
