Power Tools

The three steps to becoming your dreams are well known by graduates of Empower U.

It isn’t rocket science, this formula to accomplish more than most people think possible. It’s not some hidden mystery that can be unfolded by those of a certain IQ. It is a simple pattern… Becoming your dreams: Want it. Create it. Live it. It all starts with dreams and dreams start with knowing the answer to the question… What do you want?

We need to know what we want, in all situations, because that will give us the direction to focus our energies and commitment.

It is hard for us to identify what we want, never mind know what someone else wants. When I work with groups I commonly ask the question, “What do you want?” This is important to identify, because sometimes we want things that we might not necessarily think we want. You might be correct in assessing your spouse’s character flaws – if you communicate them you have destroyed your relationship, but you are right. So what do you want? Do you want to be right or do you want to have a happy marriage? We need to know what we want, in all situations, because that will give us the direction to focus our energies and commitment.

There are times however when we need to find out what others want. Businesses and people constantly want to know how to motivate others. How do I get my employees to perform better? How do I get my spouse more excited about our relationship? How do I get my child to do better with their schoolwork? The real question here is, “How do I motivate ________?” You fill in the blank. This is an important question.

Zig Ziglar is responsible for one of my favorite sayings;

You can have anything you want in life, if you just help enough people get what they want.

The best way to motivate other people is to know… what do they want? So the secret to motivation is hidden in this one question…”What do you want?”. What do you want so bad that you are willing to knock down any wall and push through any barrier. When you want it that badly, it becomes desire!

The best way to motivate others is to find out what they want and then help them get it! I think most would agree that is a pretty basic pattern. The best way to find out that information is by communicating - asking the right questions and then listening to the answers.

How do you find out how to motivate a group of people? What do you do when talking to a diverse group of people that you have no interaction with? That makes it a bit more complicated. I believe in this situation the best thing to do is to go to a common denominator of what a majority of people in the group would want, or need, or possibly desire.

I believe if you are reading this article then you probably have some wants, needs or desires, or you wouldn’t be interested in what I have to say. If you are not reading this article then I am not talking to you (lol) …

Tools are so important. They are the instruments that keep us on course. Tools allow us to do more and do more efficiently than we could without them.

I believe you already have some things that you are either working toward or wanting to work towards. So, what I believe you would want is tools to help you get what you want. Tools are so important. They are the instruments that keep us on course. Tools allow us to do more and do more efficiently than we could without them.

Let me give you an example: We have just moved our Leadership Adventure classes from San Diego to Dallas and the Fernley HBS ranch. Brett Wassell, Jay Thompson, John Stuart and some other graduates came out to help build the Adventure course. We had about 14 people to help. We had to cut up telephone poles, dig holes 4 feet deep, stick 25 foot telephone poles into these holes, cut boards, have electricity brought out to the middle of nowhere…. We had so many things to do, we had tons of people to do it, we had a vision on how to do it, and we had the desire and attitude to do it. As important as all those things were, we needed the right tools to accomplish our dreams. We needed an auger to dig the holes, tractor with a chain to lift the polls, a generator to run the electric tools, electric saws and other equipment…Without these tools we would have taken 3-5 times as long and maybe would have lost interest in the process.

So what are the tools that you use from your toolbox? Do you have tools that you realize are available? Do you read and write out your goals? Do you go to training to learn, or continue your formal education? Do you create anchors to help you stay on course? Do you use pre-existing anchors to help you achieve your dreams? Do you have mentors or friends that you use to help create your desires? What are your tools? What do you want?

It is only when you step over that final line and 'Live it'- walk the talk- that you truly become your dreams.

At Empower U, we are constantly looking for other tools to help our graduates LIVE IT. If you “want it” and you do nothing about that, you are just a wannabe. If you do the next thing, and “create it”, and stop there, you are nothing more than a dreamer. It is only when you step over that final line and “Live it”- walk the talk- that you truly become your dreams.
