I close some of my speeches with the story of an old man who lived in an isolated Chinese village hundreds of years ago. It was a very poor community, but because he had both a horse and a son, he was considered very fortunate.

One day, the man’s horse ran away, and the villagers came to comfort him. They said, “You are the most unfortunate of all men, because your horse has run away.” And the old man simply looked at them and said, “Perhaps….”

One day, the man’s horse ran away, and the villagers came to comfort him. They said, “You are the most unfortunate of all men, because your horse has run away.” And the old man simply looked at them and said, “Perhaps….”

A while later, the old man’s missing horse returned, bringing 3 wild horses with it. The other villagers came to celebrate and said, “You are the most fortunate of all men, because now you have 4 horses.” And the old man looked at them and said, “Perhaps….”

Later, the old man’s son was training one of the horses when he was thrown off and shattered his leg. The villagers returned again to console him. “You are the most unfortunate of all men, for now your only son is crippled.” And the old man simply said, “Perhaps.…”

Then, a War Lord invaded the village, carrying off all the able-bodied young men to fight the invading Huns. When only his son was left behind because of his broken leg, the villagers gathered around the old man and said, “You are the most fortunate of all men, because your son has been spared from battle.” And the old man said, “Perhaps…”

What does this story have to do with my speech or this book? What you do with your life, from this moment, is a perhaps.

Perhaps, you really can live your life the way you want it. Yes, you’re free to ask, “But what if Scott’s principles won’t work for me?” Maybe you should ask instead, “What if they will work for me?”

You can find an excuse through negative self-talk: “What if this whole thing is just hype? What if it does work for some people, but it doesn’t for my situation?”

Well, I have a “Chinese Challenge” for you: Perhaps.…Maybe…Why not? What if it did?

What do you want?

You’ve got little to lose and so much to gain. Consider how much life may open up to you when you live your life—not by the odds against your success, but—by the possibilities for your success!
